Box Score
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Camille Saxton had 14 kills and Arica Nassar pitched in with 13 but the Oregon State volleyball team dropped a four-set match to California Sunday at Gill Coliseum. Set scores were 21-25, 19-25, 26-24 and 20-25.
"The match was really determined by runs of points by them when we were unable to pass the ball well," Oregon State head coach Taras Liskevych said. "We were ahead in several of the sets and then they closed the gap by serving well. We just did not pass well at those times."
Saxton was 14-of-45 on the day and added one assist, one service ace and seven digs. Nassar, meanwhile, hit .385 and posted two digs and six blocks.
The match was a defensive battle, with the teams combining for 29 overall blocks. Megan McBride had seven to lead the Beavers, who posted 15 as a team. She was followed closely by Nassar's six and Haley Clarke, who also posted six.
California narrowly out-dug the Beavers, 56-50, with Becky Defoe posting an OSU (13-13 overall, 3-11 Pac-12 Conference) team high 18. Joan Caloiro had 17 to lead the Golden Bears (13-11, 7-7).
Adrienne Gehan had 19 kills to led Cal while Shannon Hawari tallied 13 to go along with five service aces.
Overall, California out-hit the Beavers, .263 to .147.
Hawari claimed five of Cal's six service aces while Sara Almen picked up three of the Beavers' seven.
Cal took the first set, 25-21, on the strength of a .300 hitting percentage. Oregon State, meanwhile, posted a .079 mark. The first three of an eventual 16 tie scores took place during the frame.
That number almost doubled in the second set as California went up 2-0 in the match with a 25-19 win. The Bears hit .229 during the frame but also forced the Beavers into a drop as well, to .029.
The Beavers won set three, 26-24, after four ties and two lead changes. OSU was up 18-12, only to see the Golden Bears tie the score at 18. The Beavers eventually went up 22-20 and 24-23 before Cal managed to tie the score. A block by McBride and kill by Saxton put the set away for the Beavers.
The clubs were tied at 15 midway through set four before Cal went on a 5-0 run for the advantage. OSU managed to pull within three, 22-19, before California was able to ice set four at 25-20 and thusly, the match. The Beavers hit .250 during the frame but Cal hit at a .361 clip.
Oregon State stays home this week for a 6 p.m. PT match with Arizona State Thursday night that will be seen on the Pac-12 Networks in the state of Oregon. The Beavers also host Arizona Friday night at 8:30 p.m.
