Feds gets tough on shady mortgage ads

7 hrs.

The feds warned the mortgage industry on Monday?that potentially false or misleading advertisements will not be tolerated. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission announced that they have issued a total of 32 warning letters to mortgage lenders and mortgage brokers to clean up their ads. They have also opened 19 formal investigations into companies that may have committed more serious violations of law.

"Misrepresentations in advertising for mortgage products pose a significant risk of harm to consumers because they can confuse and mislead consumers when they are making one of the biggest transactions of their lives,? said Kent Marcus, assistant director for enforcement at the CFPB.

These enforcement actions result from an industry-wide advertising ?sweep? conducted by both agencies which now enforce the Mortgage Acts and Practices Advertising Rule which took effect in August or 2011.

For this review about 800 mortgage-related ads for loans, refinancing and reverse mortgages were randomly chosen and examined. These ads were on the Internet, in newspapers and in mail solicitations.

The agencies report finding four major problems:

  • Potential misrepresentations about government affiliation: For example, some of the ads for mortgage products contained official-looking seals or logos, or have other characteristics that may be interpreted by consumers as indicating a government affiliation.
  • Potentially inaccurate information about interest rates: For example, some ads promoted low rates that may have misled consumers about the terms of the product actually offered.
  • Potentially misleading statements concerning the costs of reverse mortgages: For example, some ads for reverse mortgage products claimed that a consumer will have no payments in connection with the product, even though consumers with a reverse mortgage are commonly required to continue to make monthly or other periodic tax or insurance payments, and may risk default if the payments aren?t made.
  • Potential misrepresentations about the amount of cash or credit available to a consumer: For example, some ads contained a mock check and/or suggested that a consumer has been pre-approved to receive a certain amount of money in connection with refinancing their mortgage or taking out a reverse mortgage, when a number of additional steps would customarily need to be completed before the consumer would qualify for the loan.

?Our hope is through this joint effort that we will make the point that mortgage advertisers need to be very careful about the claims that they're making in their ads,? said Thomas Pahl, assistant director of the FTC?s Division of Financial Practices. ?Both the FTC and the CFPB will be making sure claims are not being made that are deceptive which would cause harm to consumers,?

Israeli government websites under mass hacking attack

17 hrs.

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - More than 44 million hacking attempts have been made on Israeli government websites since Wednesday when Israel began its Gaza air strikes, the government said on Sunday.?

Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz said just one hacking attempt was successful on a site he did not want to name, but it was up and running after 10 minutes of downtime.?

Typically, there are a few hundred hacking attempts a day on Israeli sites, the ministry said.?

Attempts on defense-related sites have been the highest, while 10 million attempts have been made on the site of Israel's president, 7 million on the Foreign Ministry and 3 million on the site of the prime minister.?

A ministry spokesman said while the attacks have come from around the world, most have been from Israel and the Palestinian territories.?

"The ministry's computer division will continue to block the millions of cyber attacks," Steinitz said. "We are enjoying the fruits of our investment in recent years in developing computerized defense systems."?

Steinitz has instructed his ministry to operate in emergency mode to counter attempts to undermine government sites.?

Both sides in the Gaza conflict, but particularly Israel, are embracing the social media as one of their tools of warfare. The Israeli Defense Force has established a presence on nearly every platform available while Palestinian militants are active on Twitter.?

"The war is taking place on three fronts. The first is physical, the second is on the world of social networks and the third is cyber," said Carmela Avner, Israel's chief information officer.?

Last month, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said cyberspace is the battlefield of the future, with attackers already going after banks and other financial systems. U.S. banks have been under sustained attack by suspected Iranian hackers thought to be responding to economic sanctions aimed at forcing Tehran to negotiate over its nuclear program.

Shameless: NPR laughs at Hostess going out of business and eliminating thousands of jobs

To NPR, the shutdown of Hostess, which will result in the loss of thousands of jobs, is comical.

NewsBusters has the details:

The same laughing at pink slips occurred Saturday on National Public Radio?s game show?Wait Wait Don?t Tell Me.?Players were given a question after NPR newscaster Karl Kasell asked in a low growl ?Where are you, you spongy yellow delicious bastards??

After a contestant answered that it was Hostess that shut down this week, Sagal started the wise cracks. ?Hostess Incorporated, they make Twinkies, Ding-Dongs, Wonder Bread, Fudge Puppies, Fat Crammers, and Lard Bursts [laughter]?said they would liquidate the company if striking workers didn?t come back to work.?

PETER SAGAL: ?Dammit!? [impersonating Christie.] He was operating the machinery himself.? The union, this is true, the union is the Bakery, Confectionary, Tobacco Workers, and Grain Millers union, also known as the Everything We Do Is Bad For You union. [Laughter] They make Twinkies, candy, and cigarettes. It?s like the League of Supervillains, Local 619. [Laughter]

Leftists think the destruction of the American system of free enterprise is simply fodder for a good chuckle.

Texas-San Antonio (SID): UTSA rallies past USC Upstate in home opener, 67-59

SAN ANTONIO ? Senior Kannon Burrage poured in 19 points to help UTSA rally from a 14-point first-half deficit and the Roadrunners won their home opener, 67-59, against USC Upstate on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.

UTSA, now off to its second 3-1 start in the last three years, was staring at a 26-12 Spartans advantage with five minutes left to play in the first half, but the deficit was trimmed to four by halftime and the Roadrunners eventually outscored USC Upstate, 55-33, over the final 25 minutes of the contest. The Birds improved to 27-5 all-time in home openers, including 6-1 under seventh-year head coach Brooks Thompson.

?This was a very good and hard-fought win for our program,? Thompson said. ?Upstate is talented and well-coached and they execute very well. They are very hard to guard.? I was a little disappointed in our start. I thought we were sluggish, but we had several guys step up and make plays late in the first half to get us back into the game. We carried that over into the second half and I was pleased with that.?

Burrage had 12 of his points after intermission and tallied his team high on 4-of-9 shooting from the floor and a 9-for-11 performance at the free-throw line. The East, Moline, Ill., native added seven rebounds, one shy of junior teammate Jeromie Hill?s team-high eight, to help UTSA register a 37-26 edge on the glass.

Hill joined Burrage in double figures with 13 points, while junior Hyjii Thomas pitched in with nine for the Birds, who shot 54.5 percent in the second half en route to winning for the 23rd time in their last 27 non-conference home games.

Torrey Craig scored a game-high 27 points on 10-of-22 shooting to lead the Spartans (1-2). Ricardo Glenn added 14 and a game-best nine boards.

USC Upstate jumped out to a 15-4 advantage through the first seven-and-a-half minutes. That lead ballooned to 14 after Craig drilled a 3-pointer at the 5:20 mark, which made it 26-14.

The Roadrunners got back into the game by closing the half on an 11-3 run that was keyed by 3-pointers from junior Jordan Sims and Burrage before Thomas drained one of his own from the right wing just before the break to provide the 29-25 halftime margin.

Hill made a pair of free throws to pull UTSA to within 31-30 early in the second. He then came up with a steal and took it coast to coast for a short jumper to give the Birds a 32-31 advantage, their first lead since the 16:57 mark of the first half.

Sims found the bottom of the net from the corner and Burrage made it back-to-back 3-pointers with a fade-away jumper from the right wing to hand the home team a 46-44 lead with 7:24 remaining.

After a pair of Craig free throws tied things up, the Birds scored six unanswered, the last four on two layups by senior Michael Hale III, to notch a 52-46 lead with 5:16 to play.

Adrian Rodgers answered with a jumper for the Spartans, but junior Tyler Wood drilled a three from the left wing at the other end and UTSA led by as many as 12 down the stretch in scoring the victory in the first-ever meeting between the two schools, who will play again on Dec. 8 in Spartanburg, S.C.

The Roadrunners will travel to Provo, Utah, to face BYU (2-1) on Wednesday, Nov. 21. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. (CT) and the game will be televised by BYUtv (check local listings).

Christian wins case on anti-gay marriage Facebook post

Source: Google

A Christian who was demoted over Facebook comments opposing gay marriage in churches won a High Court case Friday against his employer for breach of contract.

London's High Court found in favour of Adrian Smith, a worker at Trafford Housing Trust in Manchester, and awarded him damages, saying he had not been guilty of any misconduct.

Smith lost his managerial status, had his salary cut by 40 percent and was handed a final written warning after posting on Facebook that gay weddings in churches were "an equality too far" and following up with other comments.

Although the remarks were not visible to the public and were posted outside work time, Trafford Housing Trust said Smith had broken its code of conduct by voicing religious or political views that could upset his colleagues.

Google Nexus 4 (Unlocked)

For the Android purist, only an unlocked Nexus?phone will do?since carrier-subsidized Android phones are somewhat compromised, thanks to their skins, carrier modifications, and infrequent OS updates. Enter the Google Nexus 4 ($299 direct), a totally streamlined smartphone running the new Android 4.2 Jelly Bean OS in its stock form. The phone is made by LG now, rather than Samsung, which made last year's Galaxy Nexus , and the price is also very low for an subsidized phone?even $50 less than the Galaxy Nexus. It's a great deal for what amounts to the cleanest?and in our opinion, best?Android experience you can get, despite a few significant flaws. That, along with affordability, nets it our Editors' Choice award for unlocked smartphones.

Design and Display
From a short distance, the Nexus 4 looks almost identical to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. But it's an illusion; instead of the hard plastic sides and back of the Samsung version, the LG model is nicely finished in clear glass on the back, with a lovely sparkling pattern that seems to move as you tilt the handset. The sides are in a grippy soft touch rubber, with a smoked chrome accent ring around the front. The phone measures 5.27 by 2.70 by 0.36 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.9 ounces. It's a beautiful design that befits a Nexus: understated, classy, and without frills.

There's not much in the way of hardware controls. The right side features a lone Power button, while the left panel houses a chrome volume rocker and a micro SIM card slot; if you want to switch SIM cards, you open it using a tiny metal key LG provides in the package. A standard-size 3.5mm headphone jack is found up top, while the microUSB port for charging and syncing the phone is at the bottom of the phone.

The 4.7-inch IPS LCD packs 1,280-by-768-pixel resolution, and is covered in Corning Gorilla Glass 2. There's less of a gap between the glass and display than before, which is noticeable when you tilt it on its side. The screen is responsive and feels great to the touch. Whites are significantly brighter than the dim, yellowish ones on the Galaxy Nexus. Web pages on the Apple iPhone 5 still look better, thanks to better viewing angles and a still-brighter screen, and the iPhone 5's fonts are also kerned more closely and are easier to read. But the Nexus 4 display is a tremendous improvement, and it's considerably larger than the iPhone 5's 4 inches. In my tests, typing on the on-screen keyboard was comfortable and responsive in both portrait and landscape modes.

Connectivity
The Nexus 4 is a quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and quintuple-band HSPA+ 42 (850/900/1700/1900/2100MHz) handset. There's no LTE here, but you get 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. The phone had no problem connecting to our WPA2-encrypted 5GHz corporate network. For this review, I tested the Nexus 4 with a T-Mobile SIM card.Google Nexus 4 (Unlocked)

The lack of LTE may sound like a dealbreaker, but it's really not that clear-cut. First, only the subsidized Samsung Galaxy Nexus on Verizon and Sprint had LTE last year; the newer, unlocked Galaxy Nexus never did, and that's the one that this Nexus 4 is replacing. LTE compatibility is fast becoming a given now. Still, T-Mobile doesn't have an LTE network; it maxes out at HSPA+ 42, which is still very fast. I averaged speeds of 10-11Mbps down, which is faster than what I usually see on Verizon's crowded LTE network in Manhattan. Upload speeds were much slower at roughly 1Mbps, since HSPA+ 42 is much more asymmetrical, and ping times were all over the board, so latency isn't great. Nonetheless, this is a fast phone when used on T-Mobile.

On AT&T's network it's a different story. There's no HSPA+ 42, so the Nexus 4 maxes out at HSPA+ 21. Use this phone with an AT&T SIM card, and you'll see much slower speeds than you would with an LTE-equipped phone?usually in the realm of 2-3Mbps down, or much slower than the 30Mbps+ we've seen on AT&T's LTE network. If your heart is set on AT&T LTE, you should look at a subsidized Samsung Galaxy S III ?or an iPhone 5.

We asked AT&T if it prevents unlocked phones from accessing LTE on its network, and a spokesperson said it wouldn't be a problem, so it's going to depend on which bands the unlocked iPhone 5 supports when that version arrives. Still, at $649 for an unlocked iPhone 5 and $549 for a non-carrier Samsung Galaxy S III, you'd have to really?want an unlocked phone to spend that kind of cash upfront just to use it on AT&T's network.

Performance, Hardware, and OS
In my tests, voice quality was generally good, even excellent in the earpiece, with plenty of gain, and a crisp, natural tone. Transmissions through the mic were a little thin and robotic sounding, though, and the noise cancelling algorithm seemed to struggle with some moderate construction noise in the background. Reception was solid, and a huge improvement over the spotty reception I experienced with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

Calls sounded clear through a?Jawbone Era Bluetooth headset, though it was a little unreliable; I had trouble getting calls to stay in the headset, and while I could trigger voice dialing over Bluetooth, Android's built-in voice recognition never understood the number I was trying to dial.?The speakerphone gets quite loud, but it has a piercing tone at maximum volume that's uncomfortable to listen to.

We're still testing the Nexus 4's 2100mAh battery and will update this review as soon as we have a result. It's worth noting that the Nexus 4 also supports wireless charging with compatible charging pads; it doesn't come with one, but they're available on the aftermarket for $50 and up, depending on the brand. Wireless charging is useful, but not as perfect as it sounds; you still have to plug the wireless charging mat into the wall. But at least you don't have to plug and unplug the actual phone each time.

Our hair tricks ? since you asked! | Rowan Family Tree

An online friend recently?asked me for my hair tricks in heinous detail. Well, after writing out my pearls of wisdom (gflaw) I thought I would share them here with you too. I?d love to hear from others if you have other tricks or especially differing opinions on anything!

_______________________________________________________

?I can only tell you what works for my daughters. They have pretty tight hair, but it is in small ringlets.

The first big bit of advice I can give you is this: Braids.

Having free hair of any kind, like a ponytail, or two paths, is way way way more work than having their hair in braids. You can actually tell whatever I am disorganized or my life is getting out-of-control, when my daughters have free hair. That?s my dirty little secret!

Now, you don?t have to be super awesome at braiding. There are lots of simple braids like box braids and simple French braids that work really well and can last for a short amount of time. The trick is that you want to keep their hair very well moisturized, and in order in braids.

When you have free hair, the ends get tangled and there is a lot of compression. So the hair will get damaged a lot faster and will also take a beating every time that you have to pick it out. One of the many advantages of braids is that you are only picking out their hair and putting those curls in danger from the brush once every few days, week, three weeks? Instead of every day.

My daughter in these pics has half free hair ? so we either have it in a bun, or pick it out right before school EACH DAY in this style.

My daughters? hair goes all the way down past their shoulder blades and so when they do have free hair it must be picked out at least every 24 hours. Now THAT?s a lot of work!

So these are my tips. Again, just my personal opinion and experience.

First, keep your daughters hair in braids. This will save you so much agony and will save her a lot of pain and stress as well.

When we take out braids, we always be sure to take them out gently without breaking any ends. Metal tailed comb to the rescue! I also will trim their hair about every 4 to 8 weeks. Like mentioned, if the hair has any kind of dry ends, it will tangle so much faster.

Then I make sure that we pick it out with wet conditioner on it. I never pick out my daughters? hair unless it is wet and covered in some kind of lotion. I personally love that conditioner from Lush, called American Cream. We also use for super tangles and for the occasional free hair day ?Be Curly? cream from Aveda which works very well. Super luscious care as a leave-in for those occasional free hair days too!

If we are just taking out braids then I always shampoo their hair very well. Often I will use two passes with the shampoo. My favorite is Lush?s beer shampoo: Cynthia Sylvia Stout. It seems to strip out lots of the yuckies that get in their hair and stay over time. Then conditioner. Pick out. Then rinse.

After you have picked out the hair then if it is going into simple French braids or four big braids, I usually just braid it right in the bath. But if it is not going into simple braids I will take them out with hair wet and sit in front of the TV. Since they don?t usually watch TV, a movie is like a morphine drip.

Then when we get to the braiding I make sure I put lots of the magic elixir in. For those of you that don?t know what this is??Here?s the recipe.

When I do the braids I make sure that there is some oily Magic elixir throughout their hair. I have arthritis, and it helps me grip their hair too. But it also means that we can pull the hair a lot tighter and smoother into the braids.

So I part their hair, braid it up, and that?s it.

Of course it?s not easy as that. But you can see lots of YouTube videos online on how to braid different styles.

I should mention that if their hair (pre-braiding) is looking very dry and crusty, I will first of trim the ends or just as often put (sweet almond or olive) oil all through their hair. Then I put it up in a bun under a sleep cap let them sleep on it for the night. Of course the oil soaks through the sleep cap, so I put a towel on their pillow at night. But I can tell you it doesn?t matter how much oil I put in their hair? In the morning it is also wicked up. This occasional oil bath really seems to help with scalp and hair condition. We probably do it once every month or two.

Once it is in braids, I will usually spray it once every day or two with a leave in conditioner. We love Biolage. We don?t usually wash their hair at all until the braids come out two or three weeks later.

Sometimes though, my husband complains that they are starting to smell like an old dusty lady, so then we will just simply rinse their hair under the shower spray. But usually they go for two weeks without washing their hair quite easily. It never gets greasy. But sometimes it does get dirty and dusty. Active children.

Well hopefully that is helpful!

Really, the key is to keep your kids? hair in braids. When I drive around rural Ethiopia we are in the middle of nowhere and they don?t have any lush conditioner, hot water or fancy lotions. But there is a reason that every little girls has her hair in braids. It?s because it?s the easiest way to care for their hair. And it is expressive and shows care as well.

And of course, don?t forget to save the braids in a sleep cap!

Lots of luck!

On Cisco's Novel, Aggressive Approach to Patent Trolls ...

By Ashby Jones

The universe of options for companies fighting with ?non-practicing entities? (aka ?patent trolls?) is regarded as being fairly limited.

Companies typically just defend themselves when named as defendants in lawsuits by NPEs, which?buy up patents and seek to make money from them through licensing and litigation. Occasionally, companies have pre-emptively asked a judge to declare either that a particular NPE patent is invalid or that no infringement took place.

But Cisco Systems Inc. is trying a different, more aggressive approach. Cisco is filing claims against NPEs, accusing them of breaking the law.

Cisco?s suit against Chicago-based Innovatio IP Ventures LLC makes an interesting example. In that case, Cisco is targeting a tactic that some NPEs have employed in recent years. Rather than allege that a big technology company has infringed one or more of their patents, Innovatio and other NPEs have gone after the tech company?s customers.

Cisco, which is based in San Jose, Calif., and co-plaintiffs Netgear Inc. and Motorola Solutions Inc. , claim that Innovatio has sent 8,000 ?threatening? letters to coffee chains, hotels and other retailers using Wi-Fi equipment that includes the three companies? technologies.

Innovatio?s tactics, Cisco argues in its lawsuit, are ?misleading, fraudulent and unlawful.? It says they effectively amount to an extortion scheme, and therefore violate federal anti-racketeering laws.

Innovatio said it ?categorically? denies Cisco?s allegations. ?Cisco?s claims are long on rhetoric and hyperbole and short on the facts and law,? said Matthew McAndrews, a lawyer for Innovatio, in a statement. Mr. McAndrews said Innovatio this week will ask James F. Holderman, the federal judge overseeing the case, to dismiss the claims.

Patent experts and lawyers are watching the two cases closely.

?A win by Cisco isn?t necessarily going to stop the NPE industry in its tracks,? said Ann Fort, a defense lawyer in Atlanta who isn?t involved in the cases. ?But it could halt some of the tactics used by NPEs, like going after companies? customers.?

To win in court, Cisco must prove not only that Innovatio?s claims were bogus, but that Innovatio knew they were bogus, said Daniel Ravicher, a law professor at Cardozo School of Law in New York. ?That?s hard to do,? he said. ?I really don?t think this is a tactic that?s going to get very far.?

But others have higher hopes for Cisco?s approach. ?Sometimes, lawsuits are about how much damage you can threaten in order to change behavior,? said Robin Feldman, a law professor at the University of California?s Hastings College of the Law and author of a recent book on patents. ?At the very least, Cisco might get that. Or it could get a sympathetic judge or jury that takes Cisco?s case and runs with it.?

Fantastic Royal to thump Bersheda Phantom in A1 400m Flat at Romford

Bersheda Phantom?s claims are solid in Monday?s A1 400m Flat at Romford. The A. Ingram-trained is appearing after a couple of fantastic victories, the latest of which came just a few days ago.

The black dog suffered a lot of mess in October, but this month so far has proved to be lucky. On the third of November, he grabbed the first place by one and a quarter lengths despite getting bumped in the beginning.

The son of Black Shaw, out of Beat Them Millie, carried forward his good momentum to bag another victory, this time by even bigger margin. On November 8th, he always led the proceedings, taking the big prize easily by four lengths.

Bersheda Phantom is in great shape, and one can?t knock recent success. But there are a few things going against him. He is moving up to this level, and will be under tremendous pressure. So, he needs to raise his game to be equally good in this class.

Furthermore, the draw isn?t in his favour. He has a tradition of getting bumped after leaving the third box, and a similar incident might take place tonight. So, the bettors should not trust him blindly.

In such circumstances, Fantastic Royal looks safer option. The black bitch has recently made two fantastic trips at this level. On her promotion to this level on the first of November, she was second behind Confident Ramona.

She further improved, and clinched a fabulous ?-length win just a few days back. The J. Reynolds-trained has done well at this level, and will be under less pressure than Bersheda Phantom. Hence, a chance can easily be taken on her.

Besides the pair, four hounds will look to do some damage. Their names are: Millwards Tiger, Farloe Tendulkar, Redhot Poker and Maureens Mystery. The excitement will be started at 21:30 GMT.

Maureens Mystery will find it hard to fancy chances. Millwards Tiger won?t be far away as the medals are awarded. Redhot Poker is unlikely to make an impression. Farloe Tendulkar is stepping down to this class after finishing third at the top level. Yet, his chances are not bright.

lijansharma: kudals: molina anvil: Reference and Education: Proper

Becoming an electrician starts with getting the right schooling. One can start quite early, even in High School. Many vocational programs in secondary schools have an electrical program. Following High School graduation, one can enter a program at a college to further their learning. Community colleges often have excellent trades program, including electrical. In addition to their typical general education courses like math and English, students will take practical courses where they learn both the science behind the trade and also get to apply and learn new skills in hands-on work. If one desires to learn more about the scientific end of things, they can attend a four year college that offers advanced programs like electrical engineering or similar majors. Community colleges are great because they offer students practical experience.

One can also do some extra work on their own to increase their skills and education. It is a great idea to find an experienced individual who works in the field and get close to them. An experienced worker can offer electrician training in the form of an apprenticeship or might be able to hire a student to work for them. They can also share the pros and cons of the industry, as well as stories from on the job. This will give the young student a better idea of what daily life is like as an electrical worker, and help them decide if this is really the field that they want to devote their life to. Working with a professional can help one meet others in the field and perhaps potential future customers. The pro may also have some suggestions for training programs or courses that the aspiring electrician can take advantage of. They can serve as a reference for the student's resume.

Before one can be successful in industry, they must have to proper education and training. Fortunately, budding electrical workers have many options to help them reach their goals and better themselves.

How To Make Your Wedding Anniversary Special | Her Caribbean

How To Make Your Wedding Anniversary SpecialTenth, twenty-fifth and fiftieth wedding anniversaries are considered to be the landmark wedding anniversaries, but each passing year of a loving and happy marriage deserves to be celebrated just as much as the big three, so here are some ideas for how you can make your wedding anniversary special this year, be it the first, the twenty-first or the fifty-first.

Choosing a Date

One can only hope that you do know the date of your wedding anniversary (for your sake!), but you may want to celebrate your wedding anniversary before the actual date in order to surprise your partner. If you do want to have a surprise wedding anniversary celebration, make sure your partner is free on the night you choose and make up an event that you two have to attend that night (a company function, dinner at a work colleague?s house etc.) This way, you can ensure your partner will dress up for the occasion without guessing the real reason.

A Chauffeur-Driven Car

On the chosen evening, have a chauffeur-driven car ordered and when it arrives at your house, feign surprise; you could even pretend to be busy getting ready and ask your spouse to go check who?s outside. Arrange with the chauffeur service company to have a bottle of champagne or wine waiting in the back of the car ? and perhaps a bouquet of flowers, for good measure! When your partner realises the car is for you two, don?t disclose the destination ? you could even ask them to guess, teasing them with clues.

Delicacies and Desserts

The first port of call should be a classy restaurant ? a wedding anniversary is not the time to be stingy! If there?s a restaurant that has a special significance for your relationship, you could choose to go there. Alternatively, pick a restaurant that both you and your partner are likely to enjoy. It?s advisable to make a reservation beforehand; if you specify that it?s a wedding anniversary, they might even be able to arrange for a special dessert or at least give you one of the best tables.

How To End Your Night

So you?ve both eaten and reminisced about your years together over desserts and you?re wondering where to go now? Your next destination depends on what you two are interested in. The theatre could be the next stop on your cultured night out, if you both enjoy drama, or you could simply go to see a good film together. Alternatively, you could go for a romantic walk through the city streets ? if your love story played out in the city you now live in, you could lead your partner to significant places, such as the place where you first kissed or the place where you first said ?I love you.?

Such an evening will not break the bank, even if you do splash out a bit, and your partner is sure to be reminded of all the reasons why they first fell in love with you over the course of your romantic night together, so don?t let your wedding anniversary pass without doing something special to mark the occasion and spend some time alone with your partner.

This article was written by Michael O?Keefe, an advice columnist who recommends using a chauffeur service to mark special occasions.

Taking Care Of The Elderly In Your Family - Family - Nairaland

Taking Care Of The Elderly In Your Family by Miss_Ife(f): 12:47pm On Nov 11I recently visited my grandmother in a retirement home, where she's been staying for the last few years. She is getting older by the day and this is starting to affect her abilities.

I felt so bad seeing all these people being taken care of by nurses, in a home that is not theirs, far away from their family. I naturally offered her to come stay with me, my mom offered the same... And she declined.

She said she doesn't want to be a burden, that she is doing ok here, that we have enough on our hands with the young ones. I was really disappointed. I thought she would love being surrounded with children, grandchildren and great grand children.

The place she stays is neat, she has her own room and the staff is really efficient. They offer activities for senior and she is still allowed to go out as she likes. Still... even though it is the norm in the west, I feel something's wrong in letting her stay there. I want to be there for her last moments, even if that means taking care of her like a small baby. I can't stand the idea of her dying all alone.

What do you guys think about it ? Should we just respect her wish and let her stay where she is ? How do you take care of the elderly in your own family ? What plans did you make/are you making to take care of your parents when they won't be able to watch after themselves ?

Re: Taking Care Of The Elderly In Your Family by Siena(m): 1:29pm On Nov 11Respect her wishes. I can see where she's coming from. She's surrounded by lots of other people of similar age, and she's content. Upheaval (which is what it would be, if you forced her to live with you) can have adverse effects on her health.

As long as the staff are efficient in their duties (you state they are) and she's not being maltreated, I would be content to leave things as they are. Just visit her as often as you can, and let the staff know you MUST be contacted, regardless of the time, if they feel she hasn't got much time left.

ifyalways: How did she end up there in the first place? She asked to be taken there or you guys decided to take her there undecided

I was gonna ask the same question before I scroll drown and read your comment,

many of those seniors rarely go back home because when the decision has been made , trustees, family services and other paper work ,

its always difficult for them to go back home....I don't want to go too much into details so I will not hurt miss-ife's feelings and for confidentiality reasons

.... just leave her be and pay her constant visits ..,.. If you promise to be there for supper, shopping or to bring her ggkids ... be there....and when her last day comes .....you'd be surprised she'd wait for you to see her last breath while she holds your hand ... ...

Just visit her as often as you can, and let the staff know you MUST be contacted, regardless of the time, if they feel she hasn't got much time left.

Is it not African cultural taboo to place family elders in an human warehouse?

Re: Taking Care Of The Elderly In Your Family by odumchi(m): 6:37pm On Nov 11I think that she desires to live among her children but sees her increasing needs as an impedement to her children's happiness. It is the wish of every man to take care of his children and have his children take care of him when the time comes. However, placing the man in a retirement home/nursing home ultimately defeats that purpose. Furthermore, I think that such an environment breeds depression and sadness.

I think, in your case, what she needs is to be in the company of relatives and loved-ones. You might need to set up accommodations for her within your home (if you think that's best).

It's because of things like this that our ancestors built large houses and established compounds.

Please let her be oh. Aficans and drama. Nothing wrong in staying in a retirement community, not everyone wants to be surrounded by the noise of grandchildren, we describe roles and pictures and expect evenryone to fit in.
The old woman has social activities with her mates, friends, can go in and out without anyone making it an issue, let her be, npt everyone wants to be around children especially these days. If Grandma says she is fine let her be.

Miss_Ife: I recently visited my grandmother in a retirement home, where she's been staying for the last few years.

Aigoo!!. . . you are disappointed that your grandmother did not choose to surround herself with children, grand children and the lot? shockedshockedshockedshocked Are you being real here? The woman has, over the years, accepted the life she has right now, and probably made friends in that time too. You come along, and expect her to just abandon all that to live with you(be a burden to you) likely with fears that you might rescind your offer when you get tired of taking care of her aging body(note that she is someone who lived the past, probably 50 years taking care of herself), and probably throw her back their or to an even worse situation. Are you serious about being disappointed? Really?

If I had access to that woman, I would probably tell her to stay where she is and instead ask you to bring the kids over more often. My gosh . . . talk about being selfish.

Re: Taking Care Of The Elderly In Your Family by richfaxy: 8:32pm On Nov 11

Even though i dont buy the idea of them staying in aged homes, since its her wish to be left there, then u have to respect her wish. She is comfortable there and you have even attested to the fact that they are taken care of, she sees people same age as she is and she has found a new home for herself there.
Just try to see her as often as possible and try to be there during her final hours that is if u can have a hint of it.

Re: Taking Care Of The Elderly In Your Family by aadetoyin(f): 8:44pm On Nov 11There's nothing wrong wit her been in a nursing home because its not easy taking care of the elderly at home. They like attention but its not easy wen u have to go to work. You end up spending very little time wit them and they will feel neglected but in nursing homes they meet other old people who they can relate with. So they don't feel lonely.

All u have to do is make sure u re available whenever she needs u. Visit regularly and do things she enjoys wen u are wit her.

I had to take care of my grandmum for a little more than a year. It was not easy cos we had different diets and I couldn't spend as much time as she wanted. She always wants to talk but I have zillion things to do.
It was fun but very tasking and with her getting older it was really difficult so if I have to choose again, I'll rather choose a good nursing home.

It's never her wish,

nobody wishes to sell her comfortable house or compromise her rental property disposing all her precious treasures she acquired in ages

and wake up one day and say oh I think I'm gonna spend the rest of my days in old folks home undecided

All my years of experience with vulnerable people say 95 out of 100 wish they live with their families and the remaining 5% are non verbal ( can't talk) so what are the odds? Go figure undecided

Who told you they don't like to be around kids? Nigerians with their dumb insinuations !

OP like I've mentioned just leave her be and pay her visit to keep her company as much as you can, The Lord is your strength .

Re: Taking Care Of The Elderly In Your Family by slimyem(f): 11:14pm On Nov 11

@op..My family would give anything to have what you have now...a place where grandma can be well catered for and all we just have to do is pay the bills but sadly, there are no trusted old people's home in my town so we are stuck with this great-grandma and its been really hard taking care of her.
I think you should let your grandma be..especially since its her choice and she's being taken care of nicely.
You shouldn't be worrying at all.

Re: Taking Care Of The Elderly In Your Family by ifyalways(f): 11:15pm On Nov 11Jidegirl, you know right, the OP needs to answer our question as to how she landed at the home first?

If they took her there against her wish or sweet talked her into going there, then its understandable if she's rejected their offer now.

@OP, how did she end up there initially undecided

She is in the best place for her .She doesn't have to worry about how to get to the doctor's office when she is sick or making you rearrange your schedules to accommodate her.
Your grandmother is a very selfless and considerate woman. We need more people like her who will not only think of themselves but the comfort of others.
She is in a retirement home ,that doesn't mean she is about to die,so forget about death for now and enjoy her .
Most of those facilities have recreational activities for the seniors including outings.
She is living out her years well from what I gathered from you
What else could explain why she insists on staying where she is.If she returns home with you,she will probably be stuck in the house all alone while you work.In the retirement home, they have lounges where she can interact with other retirees.
Respect her wishes and don't feel sorry for her.Visit her often and bring her your local foods and encourage the rest of the family to do same.if she can come on weekends,go pick her up for some weekends and family gatherings.
Nothing will give her greater joy than seeing you come by ever so often.By so doing, she will never be alone.Call her at night and say goodnight and in the morning to say good morning ma.
You will add years to her years when she knows that love sorrounds her even with this decision.
This is exactly what I would do if she were my grandmother and what I would expect from my children and grandchildren when I get to that stage in life.
Cheers

Re: Taking Care Of The Elderly In Your Family by NewsFlash101: 2:10amRe: Taking Care Of The Elderly In Your Family by minute(f): 2:15amMost elderly people do not like change. They are afraid of losing control of their lives and being

dependent on others or taking care of them. If you get worried enough, get her one of those

wearable buttons to push for help . .but know she still may not use it . . doesn't want to bother

anyone. Maybe you can sit down and just talk about "her" past. Have tea together. Just talk, converse.

For no reason. Does she have visitors?

Relax and enjoy yourself. . . .make sure she has her favorite candies, puzzles ,kleenex, comort foods etc.

Shes a big girl, I'm sure shes in good hands. You can leave gran a bouquet of flowers every now and then

and address the card "from your secret admirer" but don't tell her it was you.

These are just some things I thought of to help you think of because you may be too involved and have lost

a little perspective. I love to talk with older people. They are little treasure troves of history.

Their first car, plane ride, radio show, talking movie, first kiss, how they survived the depression or the

war. All that stuff is fascinating. I have spent hours and hours in hospice homes listening to stories.

They are history on two legs and I love to listen to them. They get that little glint in thier eyes when

they talk about thier first trip to bootlegger when Prohibition was on. Or, the scowl when they relate

their harrowing experience running from Hitler's Germany or the guys who were in Pearl Habor of the tough

old salts who were in the Merchant Marines or the French Foreign Legion. The blush of remembrance of their

first dance with a man. Everyone has a story.

I hope all works out and you make the best out of life that you can with the amount of time that you have.

Re: Taking Care Of The Elderly In Your Family by debrief08: 2:18am

Haba Jidegirl, its not fair to call someone elses view "dumb insinuations", you can disagree but to run down anothers point of view with an almost insultive defination is really not nice.
It is a point of view, you may not agree but life presents different points of view, it is not one way or the high way. What you want may not be what others want and if they decide they want something else its in no way "dumb" its freedom of choice.

Re: Taking Care Of The Elderly In Your Family by jidegirl12(f): 2:44amDebrief Abeg leave me alone jare, I'm not a child and a grown ?ss adult and I can choose my words the way I like, you've seen other members here used words like F?cktard and even worse and when you show up all you do is started cracking jokes with them like it never happened and you dare not tell them what you're telling me now.

Pls leave me alone, I respect you but don't tell me what to do/ type... it's a free forum.

Re: Taking Care Of The Elderly In Your Family by debrief08: 3:17am

Jidegirl, I only responded because I think you were responding to me.
I have never used such words on anyone and it will be unfair to judge me based on how others respond. Should they use those words on me I will say the same thing to them.
I don't know what you have going on with others but it will be unfair to use that as a standard, I will never joke at anyone who insults others, I may laugh at anything but not insults to someone else.
That I am friendly with people doesn't mean I agree with them all the time, we disagree on issues, but I state my disagreement without belittling or insulting anyone, when I loose it I apologise.
If anyone else has annoyed you take it up with them, on the "chores" thread I disagreed respectfully with everyone even when we had different views, took my time to address issues point by point to disagree without using any of those words you said.
Look at my profile, believe me I have tried to get people to reduce the insults but at the end I realised that people are different and express themselves differently and as you said they are adults, why I responded was because I was the one who made the statement you termed "dumb insinuation"
Anyway, like you said you are an adult and I respect that. Indeed you can respond the way you choose, I get that now.
Have a pleasant day

Re: Taking Care Of The Elderly In Your Family by jidegirl12(f): 4:03amOh Debrief , I wasn't referring to you atall if that what you thot, we dey fight? ( I wondered myself why you threw the post to me for a sec undecided)

I just made a comment and there's no other word other than dumb that came to my mind and that's it...

I don't like fights and back and forth stuff and just so you know I didn't even read your post cos I always thot you say the right thing so I scoll past it I guess.

As per the chores thread lol Gosh I wasn't even referring to that.......but it's all good. Have a good one too .
