In a regional final dominated by Plantation American Heritage, several Dade schools also had golfers step up and advance to states.
At the Region 8-1A finals at Grand Palms Country Club in Pembroke Pines on Tuesday, the Ransom Everglades girls? team finished in second with a score of 315. With the top two teams advancing, that was good enough to beat Carrollton by 13 strokes and earn a berth along with American Heritage.
Carolina Garrett led the Raiders with a 78, and Alix Hamilton, Katie Hanley and Chloe Horton all followed suit behind her, shooting 79s on the par-71 course.
Advancing individually was 12-year-old eighth grader Tanya Eathakotti of Carrollton, who shot a 78 and beat out Pine Crest?s Sam Haubenstock in a tiebreaker to move on with Westminster Academy?s Ashley Malinchak (68).
On the boys? side, Gulliver?s Anthony Infante, along with University School?s Jonah Wasserstrom, carded scores of 73 to advance individually outside of American Heritage and Cardinal Gibbons, the two teams to move on.
The day, however, belonged to American Heritage, with the boys and girls claiming team titles.
The Patriot boys outlasted Cardinal Gibbons by one stroke, 290-291, and the girls dominated play with a team score of 278, 37 strokes better than runner-up Ransom. Both punched their ticket to states.
The girls? team has now reached the state championships every year since 2005 and the boys have made three consecutive trips and have been there 13 of the past 14 years.
?They work harder than most schools. They sacrifice more than most schools,? boys? golf coach Brandt Moser said. ?They enjoy the team concept, so they like coming out here under the pressure of team competition. They approach it different than most schools.?
All five of American Heritage?s girls scored in the top six on the day. Leading the way was junior Jamie Freedman, who shot a 4-under 67.
On the boys? side, Patriot Kristian Caparros was one of three golfers, along with teammate Jorge Garcia and Cardinal Gibbons? Sean Smothers, to card a 69. It took two playoff holes to settle it, but Caparros, the sophomore, bested both in the playoff.
American Heritage now shifts its focus to the state championships at Mission Inn Resort and Club in Howey-in-the-Hills on Oct. 30-31.
