Depression is a very common psychological disorder that will cause individuals to experience depressed mood, lack of interest in normal daily activities, poor concentration, difficulty in making decisions, change in appetite, fatigue, low energy, increased anger, lack of sleep, low self-worth and physical pain, frequent thoughts of suicide and feelings of guilt.
Depression can happen to anyone, but effects of depression may vary differently and can range from mild to severe. Depression not only affects your brain and behavior, but also affects your entire body.
It disrupts your daily life and reduces your quality of life. Health effects of depression are linked to other health problems including cardiovascular such as heart disease, imbalance hormones, low immune system, memory loss, chronic pain and stroke.
How effects of depression can harm your body?
1. Heart diseases: The most commonly known risk factors for heart disease include family history, smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol.
Now we know that obesity, an inactive lifestyle and depression also serve as a risk factor for heart disease which in turn develops plaque in the arteries. In fact, people with depression are at twice the risk of developing heart disease compared to people without depression.
2. Imbalance of hormones: Depression is basically a neurological condition. Usually a normal person?s cortisol levels are highs in the morning, then slowly decreases during the day.
Whereas a depressed person?s cortisol levels are high in the morning, but continue increasing during the day and night, resulting in a hormonal imbalance in the body. Imbalanced hormones may cause a massive effect on your mental health.
3. Memory loss: Loss of focus and concentration are the major effects of depression. Depression caused by an emotional trauma may also result in memory loss. Depression impairs a person?s ability to create a long-term memory. This happens due to lack of attention and concentration.
4. Chronic pain: In many people, depression causes unexplained physical symptoms like headaches and back pain. This specific pain will be the first effects of depression on your body. A depressive headache is generally dull and occurs many times, but it is worse during morning and evening.
This pain will cause problems with sleep, daily activities and reduce your quality of life. Depressed people feel much stronger pain levels than happy people. Treating depression can help you to control your chronic pain and improve your overall health.
5. Low immune system: Immune system is the body?s network of cells and organs, which helps to protect your body against diseases and infections which in turn keeps your body healthy and disease-free.
But depressions can seriously affect your immune system as it increases the level of stress hormones like adrenaline, cortisol and other various inflammatory substances like interleukin-6 that may weaken your immune system. A person with decreased immune system performance is at increased risk of infections and illnesses.
