Indianapolis church mourns victims in bus crash

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? An Indianapolis church mourned their youth pastor, his pregnant wife and a congregation member Sunday after the three died when their bus returning from a northern Michigan camp overturned a mile from home.

Saturday?s accident devastated members of Colonial Hills Baptist Church, who had been anticipating a joyful homecoming with the 37 people aboard the bus. The crash killed youth pastor Chad Phelps; his pregnant piano-teacher wife, Courtney Phelps; and chaperone Tonya Weindorf, deacon Jeff Leffew said.

The crash, which happened Saturday afternoon near Interstate 465, injured dozens. Seven teens remained hospitalized Sunday, including one in critical condition. Bus driver Dennis Maurer, a 68-year-old member of the congregation, told authorities that the brakes failed before the church-owned vehicle struck a raised concrete median and flipped on its side, Indianapolis metro police said.

Chad Phelps, the son of the church?s senior pastor, and his wife were both in their mid-20s, Leffew said, and were expecting their second child next month. Chad Phelps had become youth pastor at Colonial Hills late last year, he said.

? ... We?re going to have a long road, but God is good,? Leffew said Sunday during a news conference.

The Phelpses? first child, Chase, nearly 2 years old, was among the injured. He was treated and released from a hospital Saturday, IU Health spokeswoman Sally Winter said.

Authorities are still investigating the crash. The bus was nearly finished with a 365-mile journey, overturning just a mile from the church, where parents were waiting to pick up their children after a weeklong camp filled with prayer, zip lines and basketball.

Weindorf, 51, had five children, Leffew said.

?Tonya was at camp because she has a special-needs child who wanted to go, and she wanted to go and make it a good week, and according to her husband, it was a great week, and that?s who Tonya was,? Leffew said.

Leffew, 44, of Fishers, had sent four daughters to Camp CoBeAc, near Prudenville, Mich. Only one daughter was on the bus that pulled into the parking lot, and he raced to the crash site in northern Indianapolis. What he found was surreal ? clothing and other items strewn about and windows missing from the bus.

?You?re just praying that it?s not as bad as it looks,? he said Saturday. His daughters escaped with just bumps and bruises.

Indianapolis Public Safety Director Troy Riggs called the crash a ?great tragedy.?

?They were not that far from home. ... That only adds to the tragedy,? Riggs said Saturday.

Witness Duane Lloyd told WTHR on Saturday that he heard a loud noise behind him as he was traveling near the intersection and saw the crash around 4:15 p.m. ? about the time Chad Phelps had tweeted that the group would arrive at the church.

?I heard a skid. I looked back. I see this bus in the air and people falling out of the bus,? Lloyd said. ?I could have gone my whole life without seeing that.?

He said people approached and tried to help.

?People were literally trying to lift the bus,? Lloyd said. ?You just try to do what you can do.?

Three teenagers were still at IU Health Methodist Hospital, Winter said Sunday, including one in critical condition. Four teenagers remained at the Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health. Many of the patients had head, arm and leg injuries, fire officials said.

Leffew thanked rescue workers and good Samaritans who tried to help after the crash, as well as local churches and businesses that have offered their support.

?We are so grateful for that outpouring of love and care,? he said Sunday.

Get Ready For A Debt Ceiling Debate Deja Vu

jack lew

REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque

U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew testifies before a Senate Banking hearing on "The Financial Stability Oversight Council Annual Report to Congress." on Capitol Hill in Washington, May 21, 2013.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Congress needs to raise the debt limit and take away the "cloud of uncertainty" about the nation's ability to pay its bills, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said in an interview broadcast Sunday.

"The fight over the debt limit in 2011 hurt the economy, even though, in the end, we saw an extension of the debt limit. We saw confidence fall, and it hurt the economy," Lew said on NBC's "Meet The Press." :Congress needs to do its job. It needs to finish its work on appropriation bills. It needs to pass a debt limit."

Senior lawmakers on Capitol Hill are trying to come up with must-do legislation to keep federal agencies running after Sept. 30 and prevent the possibility of a government shutdown. At issue is what is normally routine: a plug-the-gap measure to fund the government for a few weeks or months until a deal can be worked out on appropriations bills giving agencies their operating budgets for the full 2014 fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1.

However, some Democrats don't want to vote to continue to fund the government at new, lower levels mandated by the automatic, across-the-board spending cuts known as sequestration. And some conservatives are making a last stand against President Barack Obama's new health care law. In addition, Senate Democrats are resistant to a $20 billion spending cut sought by many Republicans.

The issue has divided Republicans between those who think it's appropriate to use the threat of a government shutdown as a negotiating tactic, and those who don't.

Rep. Peter King, R.-N.Y., said Republicans should be searching for ways to de-fund or repeal the Obama health care act. But he called threatening to shut down the government "terror politics" and said the strategy wouldn't work. Others have worried that the gamesmanship could cause Republicans to lose control of the House.

Some observers say it's an idea doomed to fail anyway, since Obama brings both a veto pen and the White House podium to the battle.

"We should not be closing down the government under any circumstances," King said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union."

Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, has taken just that tack, rounding up fellow conservatives to pledge to oppose any budget extension that funds implementation of the health care law. Sunday, he said it was unfair to implement a law that many Americans don't want and that still has wrinkles that need to be ironed out.

"I understand that there's some in the Washington establishment, some from both political parties, that weren't happy with me over this," Lee said on "Fox News Sunday." ''And in this instance, I'm going to take that as a compliment, an indication that I'm doing something right."

"The fact is that we can delay this bill," he added. "And if we can delay it, we can stop its consequences, at least for now."

Lew maintains that the president won't negotiate over the debt limit.

"The mere fact of negotiating over the debt limit, after 2011, would introduce this notion that somehow there's a question about whether or not we're going to pay our bills, whether or not we're going to protect the full faith and credit of the United States," Lew said on ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos." ''Well, it's not OK to default. Congress can't let us default."

"(Congress) has to stop looking for what's the last possible moment," Lew told "Fox News Sunday." ''They should get back after they take their time off in August and they should finish their work and get it done so that there's no uncertainty about America's ability to pay its bills."

Separately, Lew said no federal bailout is in the works for the city of Detroit, which recently filed for bankruptcy protection. Pressed as to why the government chose to bail out big banks, the auto industry and others, but isn't assisting the city, Lew said on CNN's "State of the Union" that the government has been giving Detroit technical advice and has made resources available to help take down blighted properties through federal programs.

But Lew said that the situation during the financial crisis that warranted the other bailouts was "unique," and that the current problems that Detroit has with its creditors, "it's going to have to work out with its creditors."

Arrest made after online threats to UK campaigner

LONDON (AP) ? British police on Sunday arrested a man in connection with online threats made toward a feminist campaigner, a case which has ignited calls for social media platforms to institute stronger protections against verbal abuse.

Caroline Criado-Perez says she has been facing a deluge of abuse ? including threats to rape and kill her ? over Twitter during the past several days. She said the threats started after her campaign to get a woman's picture on a U.K. bank note succeeded and resulted in the Bank of England's announcement last week that author Jane Austen will feature on England's new 10-pound notes.

In Britain, hundreds of people are prosecuted every year for Facebook posts, tweets, texts and emails deemed menacing, indecent, offensive or obscene. But while there have been several cases of online threats directed at sports figures and politicians, the verbal assault against Criado-Perez appears to have ignited an unrivalled response and backlash against Twitter itself.

The graphic and offensive threats come as combatting the scourge of violence against women has taken on a more public sense of urgency worldwide, when tales of gang rapes in India and Brazil circulated around the world. Earlier this year, more than 130 nations agreed on a U.N. blueprint to combat violence against women, "one of the gravest violations of human rights in the world," according to Michelle Bachelet, the head of the U.N. women's agency.

The head of the World Health Organization, Dr. Margaret Chen, too, called violence against women "a global health problem of epidemic proportions" when the first major global review of violence against women came out in June ? a description that Criado-Perez drew on when writing in the New Statesman about the abuse directed against her. She urged Chen to "take a look at Twitter."

Already, Criado-Perez's experience has set off a campaign and petition to press Twitter to take more action to combat online threats.

Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper urged Twitter to carry out a full review of its policies on abusive threats and crimes, and a petition urging Twitter to introduce a "button" that would make it easier to report abusive Tweets has garnered 12,000 signatures.

On Sunday, British police arrested a 21-year-old man, who wasn't immediately identified, in relation to Criado-Perez's case.

She posted on Twitter that she was at a police station to make a statement and had many more threats to report ? followed by the hashtag "shouting back."

Just a Reminder That FedEx Doesn't Give a Crap About Your Packages

It can be FedEx. It can be UPS. It can be any shipping service, really. They all promise to get your packages to where you want them to go but there's no guarantee they'll treat your packages with any sort of tender, love or care. Most likely, they'll be thrown around, banged around and destroyed in the process. Just look at this FedEx employee have fun tossing FedEx packages into her truck. I can see the appeal of chucking boxes but doesn't this just create chaos and add more work later?

Wilbraham Funeral Home punches ticket to Tri-County Baseball League championship series with 6-1 win over Chicopee Falls Tigers

WILBRAHAM - The game wasn't a close shave, although Mike Krupczak could have given himself one after he pitched his team to a berth in the Tri-County Baseball League finals.

Krupczak allowed just three hits over seven innings Friday as Wilbraham Funeral Home topped the visiting Chicopee Falls Tigers 6-1 to sweep their best-of-three TCL semifinal series at Farrell Field at Spec Pond.

Following Krupczak's gem, as he was speaking to a reporter, one of his teammates smeared Krupczak's face with shaving cream in mid-sentence.

"That was probably the last thing I was expecting," the former Cathedral High School and current Stonehill College standout said as he wiped the cream out of his eyes.

The winning pitcher took it in stride - all part of the experience with one of the league's closest-knit squads. A third-year player like Krupczak benefits from grizzled TCL veterans like longtime catcher Anthony Gorneault.

"You've got experience back there, especially Ant. I love throwing to him, and he always knows what he's doing back there," Krupczak said after his six-strikeout, no-walk performance. "It's great to have a vet like that back there. It means a lot to a lot of guys out there, so I'm just going out there to try to help this team."

WIlbraham Funeral Home must wait until at least Saturday night to find out its next opponent and until at least Monday to play. PeoplesBank and St. Joseph's opened their series Friday, and the league hopes to give the teams a day off between series.

Chicopee Falls took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by Zach Theulen. However, Wilbraham broke the game open with four runs in their half of the inning.

The first six batters reached base, and Greg Heineman drove in the first two runs on a deep shot to center field that was misplayed for an error. A fielder's choice by Brady Forrest and an RBI groundout by Gorneault plated the other two runs.

"It helps you focus more to just throw strikes," Krupczak said of the cushion. "I got to use my defense more instead of having to place every pitch perfectly."

Krupczak got out of the second after Marcus MacDonald - who was pinch running after Nick Dowell pulled a hamstring on a double - was picked off and Jeremy Hartbarger grounded out.

From there, Krupczak allowed only one other baserunner - Hartbarger on a fifth-inning error.

"I was just going out throwing strikes," Krupczak said. "I had a fantastic team behind me. Kevin (Baker) made a couple of nice plays at short, and we got the job done, thankfully."

Mike Bombard went 2 for 2 with a double to deep center in the third. He scored on Forrest's double. Bombard scored the final run after Chicopee Falls reliever Alex DeVivo balked with Forrest at the plate.

Tigers starter Kenny Vautrin struck out Ted Lerud to start the fifth but left with elbow soreness after one pitch to the next batter. Vautrin shook off the rough first inning by retiring Wilbraham in order in the second.

How To Encrypt Your Email And Other Lessons Learned At A Cryptoparty (VIDEO)

Ever since Edward Snowden pulled back the curtain on the National Security Agency's cyberspying, there's been an upswing in "cryptoparties," where IT experts offer guidance on keeping online communications private.

HuffPost Live's Josh Zepps talked with a few technology specialists to get the scoop on what exactly happens at these parties. According to Brian Penny, a blogger at Lifehack, it's a chance for inexperienced Web users to learn easy ways to protect themselves with techniques like encrypting emails.

"It's to let people know that when you're sending a normal email, it's the equivalent of sending a postcard through the mail -- anybody can see what's on there," he said. "But when you use ... encryption, it's like putting that postcard in an envelope and sealing it so nobody can see it except you and the recipient."

Cryptoparties typically also advocate measures like using off-the-record online chat applications and tapping into networks like Tor, which allows users to browse the web anonymously.

"It's bringing real world applications to what the digital technology is and kind of bridging the gap," Penny said.

Dell officially unveils Precision M3800 workstation at SIGGRAPH, gives rumored specs a nod

Remember that Haswell-powered Dell workstation that popped up last week? The company is officially ready to acknowledged its silicon, announcing on its corporate blog that the machine is being unveiled at SIGGRAPH this week. Dell is still reluctant to get into specifics, but confirmed on a teaser page that the Precision M3800 would contain a 4th Generation Intel Core-i7 CPU, NVIDIA Quadro graphics and a 3,200 x 1,800 QHD+ multi-touch display. Even better, all that is set to fit into a tight 0.7-inch chassis that weighs in at 4.5 pounds. Mum's still the word on specifics, but previous leaks assigned the machine 15GB of RAM and either a 1TB HDD or a 512GB SSD. Dell hasn't let the workstation's price slip either, but we don't expect it to be cheap -- nothing thin and powerful ever is.

Dow, S&P slip; Nasdaq barely in black despite Apple's jump

By Alison Griswold

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks mostly retreated on Wednesday as falling utility and commodity shares more than offset gains in the tech sector on Apple's solid earnings.

The Dow Jones industrial average ended slightly lower a day after closing at a record high. Caterpillar and AT&T dragged on the Dow following weak results. Earnings, as a whole, were mixed, with better-than-expected news from Boeing Co But blue-chip Boeing's stock also ended the day lower.

The benchmark S&P 500 logged its first back-to-back declines in a month. On Tuesday, the S&P 500 closed slightly lower after setting a record intraday high of 1,698.78.

The tech-driven Nasdaq barely finished in positive territory, eking out a gain of less than a point despite a 5.1 percent jump in shares of Apple .

Peter Jankovskis, co-chief investment officer of OakBrook Investments LLC in Lisle, Illinois, said investors are in a "wait-and-watch" phase as earnings come out.

"They gave us a lift during the first half of the month, and they're now having a difficult time sustaining that momentum," he said. "I think the pop that we're going to get out of earnings has already occurred."

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> slipped 25.50 points, or 0.16 percent, to end at 15,542.24 - a day after closing at a record 15,567.74. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> fell 6.45 points, or 0.38 percent, to finish at 1,685.94.

But the Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> inched up 0.33 of a point, or 0.01 percent, to close at 3,579.60.

Shares of Facebook Inc surged 20.1 percent in extended-hours trading after the company said its revenue in the second quarter increased 53 percent, surpassing Wall Street's targets. During regular trading, Facebook's stock rose 1.5 percent to end at $26.51, ahead of its results.

Baidu Inc shares shot up 12.2 percent in extended-hours trading after China's largest search engine posted slightly better-than-expected revenue of $1.23 billion in the second quarter. Baidu's stock ended regular trading at $113.37, up 3.2 percent ahead of its earnings.

In other trading after the bell, Visa Inc shares added 2.1 percent after the company reported a quarterly profit that beat Wall Street's estimates, as customers spent more using its cards. Visa also raised its outlook for full-year revenue and earnings. Visa's stock ended regular trading at $186.75, down 1 percent.

Shares of Ameriprise Financial Inc were unchanged in extended-hours trading after the company reported a stronger-than-expected rise in second-quarter profit. The company credited its wealth management business with driving its results. The stock ended the regular session at $86.24, down 0.5 percent.

Qualcomm Inc shares rose 4.5 percent in extended-hours trading after the leading mobile chipmaker posted third-quarter results that met expectations and eased concerns about slower growth of smartphone sales. During Wednesday's session, Qualcomm fell 1.5 percent to $61.39, ahead of its results.

Stocks fell across the board during Wednesday's regular trading. Nine of the 10 S&P 500 industry sector indexes slid. The utilities index <.splrcu> was the worst performer, shedding 1.6 percent, while the materials and energy indexes fell nearly 1 percent apiece.

Analysts said the stock market was pausing as investors booked profits after a sizable upward move over the past month. The S&P 500 has added as much as 7.8 percent since late June, and it has set some record closing highs along the way.

Tech bellwether Apple rose 5.1 percent to $440.51 a day after it reported earnings and revenues that beat Wall Street's estimates, helping to keep the Nasdaq afloat and bolster the S&P 500's tech shares as well. The S&P tech sector index <.splrct> rose 0.86 percent to end at 506.92, after climbing as much as 1.4 percent earlier in the day.

Caterpillar and AT&T, on the other hand, disappointed investors after posting results. Caterpillar shares fell 2.4 percent to $83.44. AT&T shares tumbled 1.2 percent to $35.40.

Boeing, also a Dow component, posted upbeat second-quarter results, but the stock fell 0.8 percent to close at $106.95 after hitting a lifetime intraday high of $109.48.

Shares of Nasdaq OMX Group fell 3 percent to $32.81 after the transatlantic exchange operator company reported a 5.4 percent drop in quarterly profit.

T. Rowe Price Group shares slid 5 percent to end at $75.61 after the asset management company reported second-quarter results that missed Wall Street's expectations.

Broadcom shares sank 15.1 percent to $27.01 a day after the chipmaker forecast lower-than-expected third-quarter revenue. At least four brokerages cut their ratings and about 10 lowered their price targets on Broadcom's stock.

Of the 169 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported results so far this season, 65.7 percent have beaten analysts' expectations for earnings and 53.3 percent have posted revenue above forecasts. Over the past four quarters, 67 percent of companies have beaten earnings estimates.

Shares of little-known uranium company USEC Inc gained for a ninth consecutive day, extending a meteoric rise. On Wednesday, the stock soared 7.1 percent to end at $13.35.

About 6.2 billion shares changed hands on U.S. exchanges, slightly below the daily average of about 6.4 billion.

Decliners outnumbered advancers on the New York Stock Exchange by a ratio of 3 to 1. On the Nasdaq, three stocks fell for every two that rose.

Mapping the Brain in Unprecedented Detail

July 24, 2013 11:33 AM Text Size: A . A . A At Stanford researchers have developed a technique to make the brain see-through, allowing them to trace individual neurons, and their sometimes far-flung connections, from end to end. They?ve succeeded in doing so with an entire mouse brain and portions of human brains.

Meanwhile, the federal government in 2014 is investing $100 million in Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN). The BRAIN scientists want to chart the simultaneous functions and activity of the brain?s 100 billion neurons and its 100 trillion synapses at an unprece?dented resolution. Understanding the brain?s circuitry could lead to better treatments for dementia and other neurological ailments, as well as developing mind-controlled prostheses and computers that ?think? like humans. The National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and DARPA will contribute to the project, expected to cost millions more over the next few years.

Meanwhile, here are the frontiers of neuroscience where scientists are learning more about the brain:

Brain Highways

When brain signals need to travel long distances, they take the highway. Researchers at Indiana University and the University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands have uncovered high-capacity pathways that form the backbone of the neural network, facilitating communication between far-off brain regions.

Gene Mapping

The variance in how different areas of the brain express the same genes may play a role in shaping the brain?s architecture. Icelandic Heart Association researchers discovered a gene that?s overactive in the brains of people with Alzheimer?s, disrupting the activity of many other genes.

Deep-Brain Stimulation

Some diseases interrupt the electrical signals neurons use to communicate. In deep brain stimulation, implanted electrodes deliver weak impulses to the brain, changing how neurons fire. The technique, a Parkinson?s disease treatment since 2002, may also be effective against depression and bipolar disorder.

Mind-Controlled Prostheses

Electrode implants allow patients paralyzed from the neck down to operate thought-controlled robotic arms to independently drink coffee, eat chocolate, and reach out to a loved one. Better understanding of the motor cortex?s cir?cuitry may unlock new prosthesis abilities.

6 bodies found in remote village in northern Mexico area where marijuana, opium grown

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico ? Authorities in northern Mexico say police have found the bodies of six men in a remote village where several homes and cars were set ablaze.

A Tuesday statement from Chihuahua state prosecutors says two of the victims found in the village of Mesa de la Reforma had been decapitated and all six were shot.

Prosecutors say four of the victims were wearing law enforcement uniforms and bulletproof vests but are not believed to have been police officers or soldiers.

The bodies were found Monday next to a pickup truck. Investigators also found more than 380 spent cartridges from automatic rifles.

The village is part of the town of Guadalupe y Calvo. That's in the "The Golden Triangle," an area used to grow marijuana and opium poppies.
