39;Green steel' inventor wins innovation award | Eco News

Leading Australian researcher Professor Veena Sahajwalla has won the $30,000 top prize in the Innovation Challenge awards run by The Australian newspaper.

A passionate recycler, she was honoured for her patented ?green steel? process, in which old rubber tyres and plastic are used to replace some of the coke in the electric arc furnaces that generate power for the production of steel.

The revolutionary approach has been commercialised locally and overseas by Australia?s largest manufacturer of long steel products, OneSteel.

As a result it has already prevented more than a million tyres from ending up in landfill and helped reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Scientia Professor Sahajwalla is director of the University of New South Wales Centre for Sustainable Materials Research and Technology.

Her interest in mining the mountains of rubbish and waste materials produced by modern society and re-using them in industrial processes or to create new goods was sparked early in life.

?As a child growing up in India I walked to school past huge waste dumps picked over by desperately poor communities,? she said.

?I always wanted to turn that waste into something we could absorb back into industrial production.?

The Australian, a News Limited publication, reported that the innovation competition attracted hundreds of entries, including a folding flat-pack house; a DNA test that would help breed horns out of beef cattle; a wave energy converter; a computer program that allows students to conduct laboratory experiments on the internet; and do-it-yourself hearing aids.

Professor Sahajwalla won the $5000 prize in the Manufacturing and Hi-tech Design category of the competition as well as the overall $25,000 prize.

She is Associate Dean Strategic Industry Relations of the UNSW Faculty of Science and is one of Australia?s best-known engineers and scientists, having been a judge on the ABC TV program The New Inventors.

She has received many awards including the 2011 National Nokia Business Innovation Award at the Telstra Business Women?s Awards and the Banksia Environmental Foundation?s 2012 GE Eco Innovation Award for Individual Excellence.

In May she was appointed as a commissioner on the Australian government?s Climate Commission.

The Very Best Of RPS 2012: Gaming Made Me | Rock, Paper, Shotgun

By John Walker on December 28th, 2012 at 2:00 pm.

As Space Year 2012 fades into the unreachable yesterday of history, we at RPS have developed preservation technologies that allow us to transmit past articles toward the future. So it is that we?re able to capture some of the highlights of the site from the last twelve months, and as with every year, among the highest of those heights are the Gaming Made Me entries. These reflections on games aren?t nostalgia, but rather personal accounts of defining moments, and that?s what makes them special. 2012?s are every bit as splendid as ever.

If you want to catch up on the complete history of Gaming Made Me (it can only be a matter of time before someone writes a Gaming Made Me Made Me), Alec compiled everything from last December backward here. It?s such an extraordinary collection. And now to add to that collection:

Gaming Made Jean Grae

The series first appeared in 2012 in September, when RPS was surprised and delighted to find itself referenced in the latest track by hip hop star Jean Grae. After tweeting our squee (squeeting?), Grae?s publicist got in touch with John to ask if we wanted to interview her. Sure, John thought, but how can that really be relevant to RPS? A Gaming Made Me! it was suggested. And so it was, as John chatted to the amiable dedicated gamer about what role gaming had played in her childhood, teenage years, entry into the hip hop scene, and what part it continues to play in her life.

Gaming Made Jonathan Coulton

Come November, Dan Gril snuck backstage after a gig by Jonathan Coulton, and spoke to the Still Alive singer about the games that had defined him, from Gun Fight to Tomb Raider, and his own programming days beginning on the Commodore.

Gaming Made Patricia Hernandez

Commissioning a Gaming Made Me from another journalist is always interesting. You don?t quite know what?s going to arrive in the inbox, and you?re not quite sure if they?re really going to get what makes the series so special. When Patricia?s arrived it was instantly forwarded around the Hivemind with exclamation marks. It?s an absolutely stunning piece, so beautifully written, capturing childhood experiences many won?t have experienced, making them feel completely relatable. Not just a Gaming Made Me highlight, but an overall highlight for RPS 2012.

Gaming Made Cara Ellison

And then it happened again. Cara?s interweaving tale of a teenage trip to the jungle, and a childhood spent with Lara Croft, is another of the best articles on RPS this year. Not only providing a fresh perspective on the narrow-waisted heroine, but also managing to make a walk for a wee seem like an Indiana Jones-style adventure, Gaming Made Me once more produces a laser-edged insight into a writer?s influences and personality.

And you?ll be pleased to learn that Nathan?s GMM is coming up before the holidays are through.

Chicago reaches 500 homicides with fatal shooting

CHICAGO (AP) ? Chicago has logged its 500th homicide of 2012.

The last time the city reached the 500-homicide mark was in 2008, when the year ended with 512 killings. Last year, city records show Chicago had 435 homicides.

On Thursday, officials with the Chicago Police Department said the city was one homicide away from the 500 mark. Hours later, a 40-year-old man was fatally shot in the Austin neighborhood on the city's West Side. Police say Nathaniel Jackson was found on the sidewalk outside a convenience store with a gunshot wound to the head late Thursday.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office says Jackson was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital early Friday.

Jackson's death remains under investigation. No arrests have been made.

Straightforward Tips For Successful Marketing On The Internet ...

If done properly, Website marketing is very effective for getting a business known. Although there are many ways to begin an online business, many of them are time consuming. We only have limited time; applying yourself prudently is the best practice. Read this article for advice on managing your time in marketing your business.

Provide a freebie to visitors of your website. A lot of people might be interested in getting a article on download. For example, if your business deals with construction, give away an article that offers homeowner tips. Irrelevant downloads and articles will not increase your visibility.

TIP! Interviews from people high up in your industry can hold a lot of value. Make sure that you get their legal permission before publishing anything to avoid major legal repercussions.

Are you searching for an online marketing plan? Get email addresses. This isn?t always easy, but if you give your guest a reason to give it to you, you can begin growing a nice subscription list. You can hold a contest or offer special incentives for visitors who leave their email address. People are more likely to provide you with their email addresses when it is apparent that doing so is beneficial to them.

Website marketing will go more smoothly for you if you create a viral video. Upload the video to YouTube and link it to your website. This will have a tremendous effect on the number of users who visit your site regularly.

It?s not imperative to spend thousands of dollars on a marketing consultant. A quick search on the internet can offer many free resources to help you with your marketing needs. Just a few of these resources could be joining a forum, reading blogs about marketing, going to a business conference or seminar, or downloading e-books.

TIP! Web design is a crucial skill to learn so invest plenty of time in learning so you can be in complete control of your website. There?s plenty of information online about CSS or HTML that will help you in web design.

Attract visitors to your site by offering up a valuable and relevant feature or service. Having animated images or even cartoons on your website might get people interested in stopping by. Useful and accurate information relating to your business will help consumers view you as an expert.

Incorporate a website banner which contains your mission statement or slogan, or possibly both. This helps your website look more professional, and it shows your visitors who you are. Make it easy for customers to order products and services.

It is important to send a follow up email to your customers. Ask them to write a review or fill in a survey after they have had a few days to try the product.

TIP! If your website looks and works well it will give you a better online experience. Make sure you always test your links and ads to ensure that they work for your visitors.

You do not have to spend all of your time with Affiliate marketing. If you use your time wisely, you will be successful.

Considering a divorce? Wait until January

8 hrs.

Going through a divorce during the holidays can be emotionally wrenching, which is why many people don't do it -- they put it off until January.?

"People don't want to upset the apple cart over the holidays, and they want a peaceful Christmas, Hanukkah or New Year's. And then, because they don't want to spend another damned year with that spouse of theirs, as soon as the holidays are over they pull the plug and file," says Alton Abramowitz, president of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.?

While there are no hard numbers on how many divorces are filed in January, Abramowitz says it's undoubtedly a popular time to act, rivaled only by September, when marriages break up after the summer holidays. Yet waiting for the holidays to pass doesn't all come down to simply wanting a harmonious holiday season. There are sound financial reasons to wait until January.?

1. Waiting for the bonus?
A husband or wife who waits until January is likely to be entitled to any year-end windfall that might come from a spouse's job.?

"In New York, at least, once you file for divorce and you set the cut-off date; anything you obtain afterward is separate property," says Steven Goldfeder, a matrimonial attorney in New York City who acknowledges that year-end bonuses are often fought over, even if a spouse declares he or she wants a divorce in January. "Someone could claim the bonus isn't really for that particular year, but a payment to entice someone to stay at the firm for the future."?

2. Cool your emotions?
The holidays are a time when emotions run high. "If your spouse always has it in her mind that Christmas was ruined, she or he may not be so eager to settle with you," says Goldfeder. "Your divorce might drag out for months or years longer than it would have."?

Once, shortly before Christmas, Goldfeder received a call from a client who said a co-worker had had a baby they both believed was his. The client, married and the father of three, planned to tell his wife and assumed she would leave him. Goldfeder talked him into first getting a paternity test. The client's family had a nice Christmas, and the day after, the client learned he wasn't the father.?

Not exactly a warm holiday tale, but by cooling your emotions, you may save your family a lot of stress.?

3. Avoid disastrous shopping?
December is the shopping season, and that can spell disaster if an angry spouse is set loose with a credit card. "The spouse served with divorce papers may feel that they deserve some kind of emotional gift because of this horrible thing their spouse did to them," says Kevin Worthley, a certified divorce financial analyst and certified financial planner in Warwick, R.I.

An angry spouse may also be more inclined to want to drain the bank accounts and run up the credit cards. "That's a danger any time, but past the holidays, when everything's been bought, there's likely less inclination to buy a big-ticket item out of revenge," says Worthley.?

4. Think about April?
At year-end, taxes come to mind. "Obviously, the better records you have, the better position you're going to be in," says Andrew Katzenstein, a Los Angeles lawyer, referring to paperwork that you might want to start collecting now.?

Katzenstein, who specializes in assisting high-net-worth individuals, businesses and charities, says that in the past there haven't been many tax advantages to filing for a divorce in January rather than December. Filling for divorce is just a beginning step, after all. Many couples end up filing their taxes jointly until the divorce is completed.?

But tax brackets may go up in 2013, depending on whether the U.S. budget dispute is resolved. So going forward, the calculus may be different. "The person who pays alimony will get more bang for their deduction buck, and the person receiving the payments will pay more taxes," he says.?

5. More time to plan?
If you've made up your mind that a divorce is going to be one of your New Year's resolutions, there are things you can do now. Whatever side you end up on -- paying alimony or receiving it -- you need to start preparing.?

"You should start collecting all of your end-of-the-year statements," says Worthley. "You really need to know everything -- your household budget, your assets, what's in your checking account, how much you're paying for the mortgage, all of your debts and your credit card balances. It's important to get all of that."?

Your financial records will be needed to determine how much spousal support will be paid out, and how the finances will be divided. "The more information you get, the less complicated it'll be when you're negotiating and working things out with a financial mediator, attorney or judge," says Deborah Moskovitch, a divorce coach in Toronto who counts January as her busiest month for new clients.?

The turn of the new year can also be a good time to try to salt away some extra money to pay for an attorney, says Worthley.?

You don't need to have all of your money affairs in order the moment you and your spouse begin discussing the dreaded D-word. You may want to start the year off with a fresh start by filing for divorce in January, but chances are you'll be lucky to be divorced before that year is up.?

"Here in California, if you didn't file by October, you weren't going to get divorced in the next year anyway," says Katzenstein. "And if you decide to divorce in January, it's not like you'll be divorced in February. It's going to be a process."?

Factbox: Key players in scramble to avoid U.S. "fiscal cliff"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The outcome of the "fiscal cliff" debate will be decided in four days, with just a handful of powerful leaders in Washington calling the shots, for better or for worse.

Here are some of the politicians and administration figures who are involved in trying to head off the tax increases and federal spending cuts that will take hold in January unless Congress acts, possibly pushing the economy into recession.

* Barack Obama, Democratic president: Reelected last month, the former Democratic U.S. senator from Illinois campaigned on the need to raise taxes on high-income Americans. He has insisted on this through the "fiscal cliff" negotiations with Republicans. But he offered them a compromise last week on setting the income threshold for tax increases at a higher level than he had initially sought. This offer was spurned.

* John Boehner, Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives: Capitol Hill veteran from Ohio. Struggles to control conservative Republicans from the Tea Party movement. Walked out of talks with Obama last week and vowed that the House would pass its own plan to avoid the "fiscal cliff." That effort collapsed in disarray. Boehner adjourned the House for the holidays and has not returned. The House was expected to reconvene on Sunday.

* Joseph Biden, Democratic vice president: Played key role in forging the 2010 deal to extend Bush-era tax cuts for two years after the Republican takeover of the House.

* Max Baucus, Democratic U.S. senator from Montana: Powerful chairman of tax-focused Senate Finance Committee. Will cross party lines for a deal. May be vulnerable in a 2014 re-election race.

* Dave Camp, Republican U.S. representative from Michigan: Chairs tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee until 2014. Gets along with Baucus. Has a tax plan of his own.

* Tim Geithner, Treasury secretary: Expected to step down soon, he is the architect of the Obama administration's fiscal policy. Took steps this week to postpone the arrival until sometime in February of U.S. government borrowing limit.

* Orrin Hatch, U.S. senator from Utah: Top Republican on Senate Finance Committee. Conservative but has worked with Democrats.

* Mitch McConnell, top Senate Republican: Worked with Biden on extending Bush tax cuts in 2010. Up for re-election in 2014 and faces scrutiny of Tea Party faction at home in Kentucky.

* Grover Norquist, activist: Heads the Americans for Tax Reform group. Almost every Republican in Congress has signed his group's "no new taxes" pledge, but its power may be fading.

* Nancy Pelosi, House Democratic leader: California representative and Obama ally. Powerful among liberal Democrats.

* Harry Reid, Senate Democratic leader: Blunt Utah power-broker and dealmaker. Must balance liberal and conservative factions, with many fellow Democrats up for re-election in 2014.

* Paul Ryan, Republican vice presidential nominee in the 2012 election and House Budget committee chairman: Wisconsin representative known for controversial budget proposals.

Week 25: Baby's First Christmas

How was everyone?s Christmas?!

We had a wonderful time celebrating with family. I?m so thankful to be with them for Christmas this year. Hunter had a pretty great Christmas too! He was fed some delicious eats and scored some awesome gifts. He?s a spoiled little guy already!

25weeks

How far along? 25 weeks

Baby?s size? The size of a cauliflower! He measures about 13.6 to 14.8 inches long and weighs about 1.5 to 2.5 pounds.

Total weight gain/loss: Not sure? Haven?t weighed myself this week.

Stretch marks? Nope.

Sleep: This past weekend wasn?t the best in the sleeping department, but I think it was because of the bed I was sleeping on if anything. The last few nights have been much better though!

Best moment this week: Our first baby shower! I can?t wait to tell you all about it!

Miss Anything? Lox and bagels (raw salmon, cream cheese, capers, & onion on a bagel) on Christmas morning. Love those things?

Movement: Oh yes! Lots of movement. It?s been so fun to see the reactions of several of my family members when they feel him move for the first time.

Food cravings: I?ve noticed that my love for salt continues, as well as carb-y foods (i.e. bread, pretzels, crackers, etc).

Anything making you queasy or sick: Nope! Yay!

Gender: BOY!

Labor Signs: None

Symptoms: My hunger has been out of control this past week! I swear my belly grew quite a bit too, so I?m thinking Baby Hunter went through a little growth spurt.

Belly Button in or out? It?s pretty much an outie these days! You can see it poking through some of my tighter fitting tops.

Wedding rings on or off? On, but I have noticed a little bit of swelling in my hands and feet this past week. We?ll see how much longer the rings stay on!

Happy or moody most of the time: Happy! It helps that I?m with all my family. Can?t beat that!

Looking forward to: Our second baby shower on Saturday!

I have lots of family to hang out with, so I?m going to keep things pretty simple today and leave you with that. I hope you all are enjoying your Christmas week!

xoxo

Israel says has no proof poison gas used in Syria

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel voiced doubt on Tuesday about the accuracy of Syrian activists' reports that chemical weapons had been used against rebels fighting to topple President Bashar al-Assad.

"We have seen reports from the opposition. It is not the first time. The opposition has an interest in drawing in international military intervention," Vice Prime Minister Moshe Yaalon said on Army Radio.

"As things stand now, we do not have any confirmation or proof that (chemical weapons) have already been used, but we are definitely following events with concern," he said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights gathered activist accounts on Sunday of what they said was a poison gas attack in the city of Homs. The reports are difficult to verify, as the government restricts media access in Syria.

The Observatory, a British-based group with a network of activists across Syria, said those accounts spoke of six rebel fighters who died after inhaling smoke on the front line of Homs's urban battleground. It said it could not confirm that poison gas had been used and called for an investigation.

Syria has said it would never use chemical weapons against its citizens.

Asked about images purported to show patients being treated for possible gas poisoning, Yaalon said: "I'm not sure that what we're seeing in the photos is the result of the use of chemical weapons.

"It could be other things," he said, without elaborating.

On Sunday, senior Israeli defense official Amos Gilad said Syria's chemical weapons were still secure despite the fact that Assad had lost control of parts of the country.

As Syria's southern neighbor, Israel has been concerned about chemical weapons falling into the hands of Islamist militants or Lebanese Hezbollah fighters, cautioning it could intervene to stop such developments.

The Google Of The App Search Era Just Might Be Google

android-eats-appleOnly a few years in, and already the mobile application ecosystem has become an unfathomable jungle of applications - some 700,000-plus in the two top mobile app stores, Apple's App Store and Google Play. And yet, we're still waiting for the Google of the mobile app era to come in and save us from the mess that is today's app market. A search engine that uses not just dozens of signals, but thousands, to help the everyday user connect with the apps they are searching for. It's possible, though, that the Google we're still waiting for is actually Google itself.

Taufik Hidayat fails to claim an international title in 2012 ... - Bettor

Taufik Hidayat fails to claim an international title in 2012 ? Badminton Review

Indonesia?s ace shuttler Taufik Hidayat has made a long lasting impact in the badminton arena by becoming World and Olympic champion during his career but it seems the Men?s Singles maestro has lived his moments of glory.

In the ongoing season, World Number 11 graced almost every prominent event with his presence but he failed to claim top spot on the victory stand in all of these tournaments.

The Indonesian campaigner participated in the prestigious tournaments like 2012 London Olympics, BWF Thomas Cup Finals, Badminton Asia Championships, All England Open, India Open and Japan Open.

Taufik Hidayat?s last title was 2011 Syed Modi Memorial India Open Grand Prix Gold as he could not raise country?s flag in any tournament during this year. Though, he managed to surge into knock out rounds of All England Open, Swiss Open and Japan Open but failed to end long streak of failures.

His last hope was 2012 Syed Modi International India GPG as he was the defending champion and critics were giving him better odds in the absence of top ten shuttlers of the world.

However, he proved all the predictions wrong by crashing out of the opening round. He looked completely out of form as an unknown Indian campaigner Pratul Joshi cast him out with a staggering knock.

The 31-year-old Taufik could stay on court for just two games and bid farewell after a receiving a straight-set defeat. He lost first set with 17-21 margin and then surrendered in the second set after reading 12-21 score on the board.

This short-lived tussle started with couple of gruelling rallies as both contenders put all they had to gain an early advantage. They remained equal in the establishing rallies but then Taufik committed some fatal mistakes that triggered the collapse.

First sign of trouble came when he let four consecutive points slip from his hands after 7-7 and allowed his lower ranked challenger to establish a decent lead. His bad patch continued also in the latter part of game as Pratul did not spare any loophole and bagged this vital match point.

Unexpectedly, former World and Olympic champion proved a sitting duck in the second set as the Indian shuttler hunt him down with great ease. Taufik Hidayat put a below par performance and lost this crucial set in a disgraceful manner. This was a wrap and he had to face an early exit from this GP Gold event. ?????

This long series of disappointing outings has brought him under fire and critics have started raising question about his future in the international arena. There are rumours that he will announce his retirement in next edition of Indonesia Open.

TTAC Christmas Special - The Truth About Cars

The basement of the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles is the subterranean parking structure in the recurring dream of automotive enthusiasts young and old. You know?the one where you exit the department store head down, fumbling for car keys as the scenery shifts to a chiaroscuro of concrete and fluorescent lights, and out of thin air appears a collection of vehicles decadent enough to make a sheikh weep. This one, however, is quite real, and perhaps the best-kept secret known to gearheads worldwide, but experienced only by a select few. Until recently, that is.

After nearly two decades of operation, the Petersen museum?housed, ironically enough, in a former department store?has opened the doors to its basement vault to the public for a limited time. The vault comprises 80,000 square feet of automotive treasures ranging from ultrarare, one-off production models, to cars owned by local celebrities or used in film production. The automobiles and motorcycles in the basement share the local, California focus of the museum?s viewable upstairs collection.

The current vault denizens, too extensive to enumerate individually, include no fewer than nine Ferraris, a Jaguar XKSS owned and restored by Steve McQueen, and official transportation of heads of state. Its variety rivals that of the storehouses of megalomaniac dictocrat hoarders. Heck, there are three Muntz Jets down there. Never heard of a Muntz (the brainchild of Glendale, Calif.-based Earl ?Madman? Muntz in the ?40s and ?50s) before, let alone seen one? Neither had we.

Executive director Terry Karges, who has led the museum since August 2012, wanted to activate the synapses of younger visitors perhaps unfamiliar with the museum?s current offerings. ?I first visited the vault when I arrived,? Karges said. He saw the museum as a ?total complex? for those with a yen for classic cars, but logistics prevented groups from touring the basement. ?The obvious is always absurd,? he said. With the intention of accommodating 50 visitors per day, the Petersen staff designed a one-hour tour of the collection, trained its docents, and added guards specifically for the purpose.

By Karges? reckoning, the work has paid off: during the holiday vacation season, as many as 100 visitors per day visited the vault, including young enthusiasts who were intrigued by the prospect of peeking into the hidden collection. According to former museum director Dick Messer, the museum is unique because ?the entire collection is here,? and it has no need for satellite storage?or off-site sub-vaults. It?s currently unclear if the vault will reopen to visitors after its three-week trial run, but Karges is optimistic in the museum?s approach to exhibiting the automobile?s past, present, and future in light of the Chrysler Museum?s recent decision to temporarily close and retool. ?We?re not trying to do only one brand,? he said. ?The museum shows off the automobile?s influence in Los Angeles, and the history of the automobile.?

Dying to return home ? Mvillariba's Weblog

Today, my aunt Araceli Villariba Remigio, sister to my father Cesar, aka Mamang Cely went home. Our Villariba clan ?with the Remigios offer prayers for her peaceful journey home. As i wrote to grieving families, my remembering self give thanks to all the moments she made us feel her love and thoughtfulness.

As i grieve and cry, i sense her thoughts that is is a homecoming. Yes, this is her final journey and we hope it will be joyful, reuniting with Nanay Nene,Tio Mario, Tia Anita,Tio Carding, Tia Bella,Tia Lina, Tio Patty and her parents Simporiano ?Villariba and Maria Araneta whom we never met since the family was orphaned .

To comfort myself, i searched the web and found the words of Rabbi Abraham Heschel on death as seeking understanding of the meaning of life and death. He wrote that finding the meaning of life and ?death leads to ?the harvest of eternal moments achieved on earth. I find this significant because Mamang Cely sowed many good seeds while alive and now she is harvesting all these good deeds. So what is the meaning of life?

Rabbi Heschel shares these words and i quote : ? ?The meaning of Life is to reconcile liberty with service, the passing with the lasting, to weave the threads of temporality into the fabric of eternity.?

Mamang Cely, now you are Home,we thank you and ask that you keep us in your heart . ? It is your time to enjoy the harvest of eternal happiness and ?eternal love.CIMG6033

Solid Tips Anyone Can Use For Personal Finance Management ...

If you live alone, your money management techniques usually don?t affect others. However, if you have a family, it is important to remember that you are responsible for their financial well-being as well. Read this guide for great tips on how to manage your personal finances in a way that will yield you benefits.

If you are looking to improve your credit report, it is a good idea to have between two to four active credit cards. Using one card can take a while to improve your credit, while using over four cards can represent a lack of being able to manage finances effectively. Start out slow with just two cards and gradually build your way up, if needed.

TIP! Although you may need to exert more effort, trying only using ATMs that your bank approves. Transaction fees that banks may charge for using ATM machines that are not affiliated with them can quickly amount to be a large sum.

The easiest way to grow your own wealth is to live below your means. Individuals that spend all their money will have a hard time in accumulating wealth. This is because they spend the money when they initially get it. Simple, spend less than you earn!

Have a little envelope with you at all times. Keep all your business cards and receipts securely stored in this envelope. It?s important to keep these things for future reference. Your receipts can be used to compare statements in the event you are charged twice for a transaction.

Put your tax refunds towards any debt you have. A lot of people buy unimportant things with their refund, instead of working on the amounts they already owe. Doing this will keep a person in debt forever.

Be wary of making investment choices based off of past performances alone. Do not stick with investments that aren?t yielding you money.

Having your home taken from you is an extremely difficult situation to live through. However, sometimes it is necessary if you want a better financial situation. You might be able to better afford paying rent at a different location. The worst thing that could happen is getting evicted because your can?t make your home repayments. You might want to act before you have issues.

You must have a good method for getting rid of financial documents safely to protect your personal finances. One of the best ways to deal with it is to buy a shredder. If you fail to shred your financial documents, you put yourself at risk of suffering identity theft. The best way to protect yourself is by being thorough.

TIP! To improve your personal finances, stop paying the retail price on your purchases. It is not prudent to restrict your purchases to certain brands unless those brands are truly better.

Watch your mail for letters notifying you that the terms of your credit accounts are changing. By law, you should receive at minimum a forty-five day notice. Read the new terms of agreement and changes the company is going to make. This will help you decide if you wish to continue being their customer. If you do not want to keep the account, pay what you owe and close it.

Knowing what possessions a person has, and their real value, can prevent those items from being sold unknowingly at a garage sale for 25 cents, or making their way to the Goodwill. An individual?s personal finances will improve greatly if they properly sell a rare piece of furniture, as opposed to just throwing it away.

If you?re in a foreign country, eat where the locals eat. The restaurants in hotels and tourist areas have ?tourist trap pricing,? which can be substantially higher than what locals pay. With this in mind, eat where the locals eat! This way, you will not be wasting money on delicacies and can enjoy the local cuisine.

To save money on your bedding, visit the bargain store when you need to get bedsheets or other bedding materials. The materials at these stores are of the same quality as more expensive materials, but you can save money on them, and it can save you time to go to one store rather than going to different specialty shops for each piece. Researching your purchases may help better your finances.

Never spend too much on food you will not eat; even if it is on sale. You can save money by stocking up on things you know you use regularly and those you will eat before they go bad. Be sensible and only buy a bargain if it is one that you can use.

TIP! Financial mistakes can teach you a lot. If you are trying to fix your credit and have spent considerable time doing so, let that be a beacon for you not to get in that kind of mess again.

Do not invest any money on something that assures you of more money overnight. Internet marketers tend to fall for these schemes. This isn?t to say that there?s no value in taking training courses. However, remember that your goal is to make money. If you?re spending so much on study materials that you don?t make a profit, you?re wasting your money.

You should utilize flexible spending accounts if they are offered by your employer. A flexible account will save you money if you use to pay medical bills among other things. Flexible spending accounts are pretax monies put aside for medical and daycare expenses. There are limits to the amount allowed to be placed in a flex spending account, so you should consult a tax professional.

Using single dollars received as change from cash transactions for the purpose of buying lottery tickets can be an enjoyable way to potentially acquire a great deal of money. If one uses the left over dollar bills for scratch-off lottery tickets, they stand a chance to win much more than they spent.

TIP! Try cutting out the cell phone to save money. While that might be difficult for you to consider, it was not that long ago that cell phones were not even available.

For small purchases, you should have 10 dollars on a debit card, or in cash, readily available. Many stores now use one of these credit ?laws? to their advantage, which requires that anyone using a credit card make a minimum purchase. It can be an understandable policy at times, but it clearly needs more definition.

As mentioned earlier, those who are responsible for others must plan their personal financial life with a heightened level of diligence. Rather than allowing yourself to spend money on things that are unnecessary and getting in debt, try to create a budget that could help you maximize the things spent from your income.

Have 2 different savings accounts; one that you can dip into on a rainy day, and one that is strictly for emergencies. In addition to saving for unforeseen occurrences, you can also save for anticipated events, such as going to college, buying a new car, or paying off the balance on a credit card.

Sharp 'Integrated Cognitive Creation' 60-inch 4K LCD goes from prototype to reality in February

Sharp 'Integrated Cognitive Creation' 60inch 4K LCD goes from prototype to reality in February

We got a preview of Sharp's "Integrated Cognitive Creation" 60-inch 4K LCD during CES early this year, and now it's almost ready to launch in Japan. Branded the ICC PURIOS, it brings a new premium level above previous AQUOS models, thanks to not only the 3,840 x 2,160 resolution but also professional quality image processing that Sharp says brings "unparalleled realism and excitement." This panel is ready for use in video production, and the LC-60HQ10 is also proudly trumpeting its status as the first THX certified 4K display. All of that'll cost buyers, however and when the build-to-order models start shipping on February 20th, 2013, they'll run 2.62 million yen ($31,376). That might not too much to pay if you're mastering the next James Cameron flick, but we'll be keeping an eye out for slightly lower priced Ultra HD TVs next month in Las Vegas.

Global corporate deals nearly halved in 5 years

LONDON (AP) ? The value of mergers and acquisitions deals around the world in 2012 was nearly half the amount made five years ago, when the financial crisis first bared its teeth, a leading accounting and consulting firm said Wednesday.

Despite big deals such as Rosneft's takeover of fellow Russian oil company TNK-BP for a projected $54.5 billion, and Glencore International PLC's $45.8 billion acquisition of miner Xstrata PLC, Ernst & Young is forecasting that the value of global M&A was 47 percent lower in 2012 at $2.25 trillion, against 2007's $4.3 trillion. The company noted a shift in activity from developed economies to high-growth ones in Asia and Latin America ? the value of deals in the U.S. halved while those in China doubled.

There were a little under 37,000 deals worldwide, around 9,000 less than in 2007, when many companies took part in a feverish bout of deal-making, many of which proved to be too costly for the companies to bear. Much of the blame for Royal Bank of Scotland PLC's near-collapse in 2008, which eventually required a government bailout, was due to its over-priced purchase of a large chunk of Dutch bank ABN Amro the year before.

The excess of corporate deals in 2007 contributed to the near freezing of credit markets that year and paved the way for the global banking crisis in 2008 and the subsequent global recession.

However, Ernst & Young said this year's slump in corporate activity was mainly due to the uncertainty created by the debt crisis afflicting the 17 European Union countries that use the euro as well as fears over the impending "fiscal cliff" of automatic spending cuts and tax increases in the U.S.

"Acute caution was the prevailing M&A sentiment in 2012," said Pip McCrostie, global head of Ernst & Young's M&A division. "The eurozone crisis continues to impact 9 global companies in every 10 and in 2012 we saw its impact reduce the appetite for M&A, even in many formerly deal-hungry emerging markets. Limited deal activity will likely continue through 2013, especially if we don't see a clear, long term resolution to the fiscal cliff."

One clear consequence of the eurozone debt crisis in Europe has been to lower the currency bloc's share of the deals that do take place. In 2007, the eurozone accounted for around 21 percent of the global value of M&A. That's now down at 11 percent.

While the eurozone has suffered, the so-called BRIC countries? the fast-growing economies of Brazil, Russia, India and China ? are filling the gap. They accounted for 15 percent of the global M&A market in 2012, more than double 2007's rate of just 7 percent.

Even if the rapid growth of the BRIC countries over the previous few years wasn't fully sustained in 2012, the global M&A landscape has transformed over the past five years. Since 2007, the value of China's M&A market has doubled, while that of the U.S. has halved, Ernst & Young found.

"China's growing global economic influence, along with the other emerging economies, has been a re-occurring narrative over the past decade," said McCrostie. "Now the numbers tell their own story ? the shift in the balance of M&A power has accelerated since the financial crisis and it will likely become even more pronounced in 2013."

Ernst & Young found that China will be the preferred investment destination in 2013. The U.S., India, Brazil, and Germany completed the top five.

The survey, conducted in October, compiles the views of 1,500 senior executives from large companies around the world and across industry sectors.

Yahoo CEO Mayer unveils overhaul of email service

(Reuters) - Yahoo Inc Chief Executive Marissa Mayer on Tuesday introduced a new version of Yahoo Mail, making one of company's most popular products faster and cleaner, with a consistent look across all devices.

The new version, which Mayer unveiled in a blog post, will be available on all major platforms, including Windows 8, iPhone and Android. (http://r.reuters.com/jez54t)

It is Yahoo's first product overhaul under the leadership of Mayer, a former Google Inc executive widely admired in Silicon Valley for her Web product savvy.

She took the helm at Yahoo in July, and the company's stock has risen 25 percent since then, reaching its highest level since September 2008 when Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang was CEO.

The years between Yang and Mayer were tumultuous ones at Yahoo, as the Web pioneer cycled through four different chief executives and a variety of strategies.

Yahoo ranks among the world's most popular websites, with roughly 700 million monthly visitors. But revenue has eroded due to competition from Google and Facebook and changes in the online advertising market that have compressed prices for the online display ads that are key to Yahoo's business.

Many analysts and tech-industry observers say Yahoo's online products have failed to keep up with rivals when it comes to integrating innovative mobile and social media features.

Mayer, who was Google's first female engineer, has said her top priority is to create a coherent mobile strategy for Yahoo and that she intends for at least half of the company's technical workforce to be working on mobile products.

Take A Look At These Fantastic Self Improvement Tips! | Lori ...

If you're new here, please subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Personal development can help you gain control of your current situation and feel more fulfilled. You will need to know some ways to stay energized if you want to successfully achieve your goals. Put the following tips to use so you can begin your journey.

Good leaders possess strength and power, but are also compassionate. There is an element of service that makes up the character of a leader, as it enables them to lead with gentleness. A leader is a person of integrity and virtue. These are admirable qualities for anybody to possess, so work on being more like a leader today.

All people are susceptible to food temptations. Stress is just as harmful to the body as eating bad foods. This should prompt you to do your best to stay stress-free.

Exercise is for everyone, not just people who are trying to lose a few pounds. Exercise has many physiological benefits. Because physical activity stimulates production of feel-good chemicals in the body, a workout program may actually make you feel calmer and more positive.

When engaging in self improvement, tell yourself that you want to be better because you deserve better. You must realize that doing your best is what you deserve. At the end of the day, you can feel satisfied that you have given it your all, and you will have nothing to regret.

Always be up for a challenge. Trying new things is a way to broaden your horizons. You may be able to gain a new understanding of the world and develop new talents. You may even want to achieve something that has never been done before. Be your own greatest inspiration, instead of following in the footsteps of others.

Don?t worry so much. Most of the things you worry about never materialize, and creating them in the present is of no value to your personal development. As an alternative to worrying, think about the worst thing that could happen and then develop a plan to address that scenario should it happen. This makes you feel prepared for the worst while still being able to focus on the best things in your life.

Write yourself a pep talk. Take a postcard and write down all the things that you like about yourself. Keep this card with you, and read through it when you feel your confidence flagging. For even more powerful results, record a video of yourself reading your list and watch it frequently. How will this help with your personal development?

Consider your personal character attributes when determining what you want to change. Your aesthetics can be changed quicker than your personality can! Clothes and looks are no reflection of the true personality of person. Personality is what gets us through life, not looks. Do not worry about putting effort into superficial improvements. Instead, concentrate on the person that you are inside.

These tips can help you to motivate yourself to become a better, more developed person. It may be a lot of hard work, but you can undertake that work joyfully knowing that you have some sound advice to give you a hand.

Existing drugs may help more breast cancer patients -Breast Cancer ...

? Breast Cancer news ? Dec 09, 2012

More patients can benefit from highly effective breast cancer drugs that are already available, according to DNA sequencing studies by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and other institutions.

The investigators found that some women with the HER2 negative subtype may benefit from anti-HER2 drugs even though standard tests don?t indicate they are candidates for the drugs.

?These patients are going to be missed by our routine testing for HER2 positive breast cancer,? says Ron Bose, MD, PhD, assistant professor of medicine. ?Currently they?re not going to receive a HER2 targeted drug because we don?t have a way to identify them. And we predict they are going to have a more aggressive form of breast cancer.?

Bose, who treats patients at Washington University?s Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, will present the data Dec. 7 at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.

Today, a type of breast cancer known as HER2 positive is treated with drugs that inhibit the function of the HER2 protein. To be classified as HER2 positive, a patient must have more than the normal two copies of the HER2 gene. Too much HER2 drives tumor growth and some HER2 positive patients may have as many as 20 copies of the gene. Doctors test for this gene ?amplification? in every patient diagnosed with breast cancer. It must be present for a woman to receive anti-HER2 drugs.

But instead of multiple copies of the gene churning out too much HER2, some patients deemed HER2 negative based on standard testing may have mistakes in just a few ?letters? of the DNA in their two gene copies that result in excess activity of the protein. Bose and his colleagues estimate that these undetected HER2 mutations ? rather than the HER2 amplification - may be driving tumor growth in 1.5 to 2 percent of all breast cancer patients. With about 230,000 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed in the United States each year, even this modest percentage translates into more than 4,000 patients per year.

The study, led by senior author Matthew J. Ellis, MD, PhD, of Washington University, and published online Dec. 7 in the journal Cancer Discovery, analyzed data from eight DNA sequencing studies, which together included about 1,500 patients. Two of the sequencing studies were conducted by The Genome Institute at Washington University, in collaboration with study co-author Elaine R. Mardis, PhD, co-director of the genome institute.

Of the 1,500 patients, 25 were found to have HER2 mutations without gene amplification. Not all mutations appeared to have the same effect, however. After analyzing 13 of the mutations, seven were found to drive cancer growth. In the laboratory analysis, most of these mutations responded well to the anti-HER2 drugs lapatinib and trastuzumab, both approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Although two of the mutations were resistant to lapatinib in lab tests, they responded well to neratinib, a newer anti-HER2 drug that is currently in phase II clinical trials.

Bose also cautions that some mutations were found to be ?silent,? meaning they did not drive the tumor?s growth and therefore would likely not respond to anti-HER2 drugs.

The study?s findings have led directly to the launching of a phase II clinical trial to test whether patients with HER2 mutations (but not the amplification) will benefit from anti-HER2 drugs. The trial will include patients with stage IV breast cancer classified as HER2 negative. Their HER2 genes will be sequenced to look for mutations. If mutations are present, they will be treated with neratinib in addition to the standard treatment they would otherwise receive.

At Washington University, the trial will be led by Cynthia X. Ma, MD, PhD, associate professor of medicine. The other centers participating in the study are the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Bose points to this study as an example of the potential value in sequencing the DNA of cancer patients, even when limited to a single gene of interest such as HER2.

?If we can identify mutations that we can act on, that information will help us better guide treatment,? Bose says. ?In this case, we don?t even have to develop new drugs against HER2 mutations. It?s just a matter of finding the patients.?

Nurse who died after Kate hoax call was from India

LONDON (AP) ? A nurse found dead days after she took a crank call about the pregnant Duchess of Cambridge was originally from India, British police said Saturday, as details began to trickle out about the woman whose death has sparked anger at the Australian radio DJs behind the hoax.

Jacintha Saldanha, 46, was found dead early Friday at nurses' housing provided by London's King Edward VII hospital, where Prince William's wife, the former Kate Middleton, was being treated for acute morning sickness this week.

Police released a grainy photo of Saldanha on Saturday. She had lived in Bristol in southwestern England with her family for the past nine years, Scotland Yard confirmed.

Police said her death is being treated as "unexplained," though they said they didn't find anything suspicious. A coroner will make a determination on the cause next week.

Police have made no connection between her death and the prank call, but people from London to Sydney have been making the assumption that she died because of stress from the call.

Flowers were left outside the hospital's nurses' building. Attached to the red, white and blue flowers, a note read: "Dear Jacintha, our thoughts are with you and your family. From all your fellow nurses, we bless your soul. God bless."

A man identified as Saldanha's driving instructor Jeff Sellick, told Sky News he was in "complete shock" at her death, saying "it's just such a shame, she was such a nice person."

In a statement, Saldanha's family said they were "deeply saddened" by the death and asked for privacy.

Saldanha had worked for four years at the hospital. She took the hoax call Tuesday by the two DJs from 2DayFM, and transferred the call to the nurse caring for the duchess.

During the call, a woman using the often-mimicked voice of Britain's monarch asked about the duchess' health. She was told by the second nurse who took the call from Saldanha that the duchess, the former Kate Middleton, "hasn't had any retching with me and she's been sleeping on and off."

The recorded conversation sparked international headlines, and the DJs, Mel Greig and Michael Christian, soon apologized for the prank. They have said they will not return to the station until further notice, though the chief executive of the station's parent company has said he stands behind them.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority, which regulates radio broadcasting, says it has received complaints about the prank and is discussing the matter with the Sydney-based station, though it has not yet begun an investigation.

The station has a history of controversy, including a series of "Heartless Hotline" shows in which disadvantage people were offered a prize that could be taken away from them by listeners.

St. James's Palace, the office of the duchess and her husband Prince William, expressed sadness at Saldanha's death, but insisted that it had not complained about the hoax. King Edward VII's Hospital said it did not reprimand Saldanha, nor had plans to discipline her.

Officials from St. James's Palace have said the duchess is not yet 12 weeks pregnant. The child would be the first for her and William.

A move by the San Diego Police Department to eliminate an exemption allowing non-profit organizations to throw fundraisers and other entertainment events without having to pay for city permits is drawing fire from charitable groups.? They say the local law enforcement agency is trying to balance their budget off local fundraisers.

The cops are hoping to make the case that the fee exemptions provided to non-profits are in violation of Proposition 26, which requires a legislative supermajority to change fees charged for licenses. They claim businesses paying for permit fees are subsidizing non-profit organizations because of the need to provide police protection at events.

There?s no word from the SDPD over any moves to eliminate the fee exemption for entertainment recently enacted covering restaurants that don?t charge a cover or stay open past 11pm.? Waiving those fees came on the heels of a campaign by trade groups to make the city more business friendly to restaurateurs.

So the upshot of this is that, if you?re selling food & drink for profit there is no fee. If you?re a non-profit group looking to raise funds, there is a fee.

The Worldbeat Cultural Center in Balboa Park, non-profit dedicated to African African-American arts and culture has posted an online petition atsignon.org?looking for public help.? The City Council is expected to hear a fees proposal in the next few weeks.

The petition background statement reads:

San Diego Police Department is currently attempting to remove exemptions for Non-Profits, holding fundraisers, forcing them to pay large fees and possibly declining to approve thousands of small fundraising events a year without providing the citizens the choice to vote on the issue under false pretense of Prop 26.

Prop 13 Reform Bill Introduced

A recent poll showing that Californians are amenable towards reforming Proposition 13 to allow commercial properties to be taxed at their current level led San Francisco Assemblymen Tom Ammiano to announce yesterday he?ll introduce commercial re-assessment legislation this session.

While reforming Proposition 13 to allow for a ?split roll? wherein protections for residential properties would remain but commercial properties would be regularly re-assessed would require voter approval, Ammiano?s bill aims to reduce corporations? ability to structure ownership to avoid having property reassessed when it changes hands.

Closing this loophole would increase needed revenues for education and other uses by taxing properties at their actual value, rather than leaving those values at artificially depressed levels. It would?not?change the property tax bills for homeowners.

One example of how the law currently works often cited is Chase Bank?s takeover of Washington Mutual; the deal was structured so that the values on all the transferred properties would remain unchanged. Proposition 13?s provisions require reassessment when properties are sold or transferred; corporations have regularly avoided that provision. That?s the loophole this bill seeks to plug.

The Public Policy Institute of California poll found majorities ? 57 percent of adults, 58 percent of likely voters ? favor splitting the tax rolls; it?s supported by 66 percent of Democrats and 58 percent of independents, while Republicans are split (47 percent in favor, 48 percent opposed).

Oh, and by the way? Let?s steal a page from the righties as we seek to address the inequities built into Proposition 13. Do you hear how niceProposition 13 ?reform??sounds?

Child Labor Law Violations Suspected at Charger Games

The contractor responsible for security and ushering at local football games has come under Federal scrutiny amid allegations of violations of child labor laws.

The?UT-San Diego?reports this morning that investigators from the U.S. Department of Labor are looking at deals between student groups at four area high schools and Elite Staffing Services.? Student groups from seven area schools have formalized agreements with Elite to provide ?volunteers? at San Diego Chargers games to usher fans or perform other tasks in return for donations. Only it wasn?t so voluntary (from the UT-SD article):

Emails from booster groups supporting?San Diego?schools show students were expected ? and sometimes required ? to work weekends to raise money if they wanted to remain in various music or sports programs.

?We need your help with the following activities which support our athletes and the football program,? the?University City?High Schoolwebsite states. ?Please?note, football athletes will be required to participate in volunteer activities as a team requirement.?

The ?donation? involved in at least one of the arrangements worked out to $4.40 an hour, meaning that the company involved was essentially getting labor at below minimum wage rates.? A contract with Elite Staffing contained a stipulation for an additional contribution for shifts exceeding nine hours. The U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act forbids children from working more than eight hours a day and dictates that they must be paid at least minimum wage.

San Diego Unified has intervened in the situation, notifying schools this fall that student associations were not legal entities entitled to make contracts.? A letter sent out to schools by a SDUSD lawyer says, ?We are actively investigating whether additional ?contracts? exist at other district schools. If more are discovered, this letter serves as your notice that no (contracts) will be honored, sponsored, endorsed, implemented or authorized by the district and all participation by district staff or students in such illegal activity will immediately cease.?

Two other companies, Centerplate Concessions and Ace Parking, also have contracts to work at Qualcomm Stadium and offer local charities chances to raise money by volunteering their time at Chargers games. Those companies are not currently included in the Department of Labor investigation. The SDUSD has indicated that at least one student group may have had an arrangement to work games for the San Diego Padres.

Contracts for security and staffing at Qualcomm Stadium are negotiated by the City of San Diego, not the San Diego Chargers.

NRA Chief Stoops to New Low

Yesterday as a memorial service for?Kassandra Perkins, the young women murdered by Kansas City linebacker Jovan Belcher short before he committed suicide, was going on in Texas a top National Rifle Association official claimed that the real tragedy in that situation was that there weren?t?more?guns involved.

NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre told?USA Today?reporter David Leon Moore, ?The one thing missing in that equation is that woman owning a gun so she could have saved her life from that murderer.?

Responding to a commentary on the tragic murder-suicide by?NBC?s Bob Costas, LaPierre went on the attack, accusing the sportscaster of ?trying to piggy-back his agenda on the back of this national tragedy and spew it all over America.?

Costa has been the target of rather vicious attacks by righty gun nuts since he dared to speculate on the possibility that the murder might have been averted had the Kansas City linebacker not owned a gun. Costas did not call for gun control laws or repealing the Second Amendment, as many of those attacking have claimed.

With at least 24 Americans every day (8-9,000 a year) being killed by people with guns? (not including accidents or suicides) and over 80 percent of all the gun deaths in the 23 richest countries combined occurring in the Unites States, you?d think that a conversation about the role of guns in our society might be allowable. (BTW, before you send me your nasty ass comments, gun lovers, be aware that I am not now nor have I ever been in favor of gun control. I might need to protect myself from nutcakes like yourselves.)

The?San Diego?Chargers Suck

We?d be remiss if we didn?t give a shout out about the front page of UT-San Diego this morning, where columnist Kevin Acee was allowed to inform coach Norv Turner and General Manager A.J. Smith that they are going to be fired at the end of the football season.? I?m sure that will inspire both men and the team to try harder this week.

Of course Acee, relying on his ?highly reliable? sources, reported essentially the same story last year only to be proven wrong.? The columnist took to Twitter yesterday to defend this year?s story, saying:

?Difference between this year and last is a year ? Meaning Dean Spanos won?t be changing his mind.?

Team owner Dean Spanos responded to the UT-SD report by saying it (the firing) ain?t so. Lets face it though, Acee has a 50-50 chance of being right.

San Onofre Nukes License Amendment Challenged

A panel of independent judges with the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board are considering a petition filed by activist Ray Lutz and the Citizens Oversight Project challenging Southern California Edison?s petition to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a license amendment.

Lutz says the amendment will allow Edison an exemption from public documents that disclose how often certain equipment at the San Onofre Nuclear plant is monitored.? From?KPBS:

?We?re talking about critical surveillances within the reactor containment building, the reactor core coolant system, ? Lutz said, ?whether or not you are checking that. This is stuff that we are demanding that they check and on a timely basis and remains all public because, no, we do not trust the utility to monitor themselves.?

?San Onofre is currently offline after a small radiation leak in January.?Southern California?Edison?filed the request for a license amendment in 2011 before the trouble with the new steam generators emerged. But Lutz said the issue is all the more important because, if Unit 2 comes back online as?Edison?is proposing, the change would make operating procedures less transparent.

Citing data saying the plant has?the worst safety record?of any nuclear facility in the nation, Lutz argued -via a video conference held yesterday- that any move away from transparency is a move in the wrong direction.

A ruling Lutz?s favor will mean that a full public hearing on the issue must take place.? Edison and the NRC are arguing that he has no standing to file a complaint, since he resides more that 50 miles from the San Onofre facility.

Desalination Plant Construction Covered by Project Labor Agreement

The San Diego County Water Authority?s approval of a 30 year purchase agreement with Poseidon Resources to supply desalinated water to the region means that construction will begin shortly on the Carlsbad facility. We find it interesting that the usual group of right wing contractors isn?t out there protesting the fact that construction will take place under the terms of a Project Labor Agreement (PLA).

For those of you who many have missed this year?s primary elections, a group of anti- union activists, led by the?Associated Builders and Contractors, successfully persuaded voters in San Diego to approved Proposition A, a measure that banned the use of PLAs in City contracts. Their campaign included lots of TV commercials warning about just how bad PLAs are for jobs and the economy. Mostly they used scare tactics, suggesting that non-union workers would be barred from working on public projects.

Passage of Proposition A in San Diego won?t stop PLAs from being used on State funded projects, according to the City Attorney.? However, the State of California has taken the position that no funding for joint projects will be given to San Diego as long as this measure is in effect, a move that could cost the local economy millions of dollars and thousands of job.

So ultimately what?s happened here is that anti-union groups have hijacked the initiative process to run a propaganda campaign. Fortunately, the measure doesn?t cover projects initiated by the Water Authority.

The desalination plant will add 2,300 construction jobs over a 32-month period, jobs that must give local (not necessarily union) workers priority in hiring.? The labor agreement will also put Poseidon Resources on the hook for any cost overruns during construction and while maintaining quality standards.

UT-SD Gets the National Spotlight (Again)

Thanks to all the readers that emailed or tweeted me yesterday about the?Media Matters?tome detailing just how bad our local daily has become under the Lynchester regime.? While there isn?t a whole lot in the article that we haven?t already covered here at the San Diego Free Press, it is a pretty good summation of the reality we face when it comes to our local daily paper.

We have asked Media Matters via email for reposting rights so we can share the entire article with you. If they say yes, we?ll post the piece over the weekend. It?s on the long side, so that makes it a good Sunday morning read.
