Indianapolis church mourns victims in bus crash
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? An Indianapolis church mourned their youth pastor, his pregnant wife and a congregation member Sunday after the three died when their bus returning from a northern Michigan camp overturned a mile from home.
Saturday?s accident devastated members of Colonial Hills Baptist Church, who had been anticipating a joyful homecoming with the 37 people aboard the bus. The crash killed youth pastor Chad Phelps; his pregnant piano-teacher wife, Courtney Phelps; and chaperone Tonya Weindorf, deacon Jeff Leffew said.
The crash, which happened Saturday afternoon near Interstate 465, injured dozens. Seven teens remained hospitalized Sunday, including one in critical condition. Bus driver Dennis Maurer, a 68-year-old member of the congregation, told authorities that the brakes failed before the church-owned vehicle struck a raised concrete median and flipped on its side, Indianapolis metro police said.
Chad Phelps, the son of the church?s senior pastor, and his wife were both in their mid-20s, Leffew said, and were expecting their second child next month. Chad Phelps had become youth pastor at Colonial Hills late last year, he said.
? ... We?re going to have a long road, but God is good,? Leffew said Sunday during a news conference.
The Phelpses? first child, Chase, nearly 2 years old, was among the injured. He was treated and released from a hospital Saturday, IU Health spokeswoman Sally Winter said.
Authorities are still investigating the crash. The bus was nearly finished with a 365-mile journey, overturning just a mile from the church, where parents were waiting to pick up their children after a weeklong camp filled with prayer, zip lines and basketball.
Weindorf, 51, had five children, Leffew said.
?Tonya was at camp because she has a special-needs child who wanted to go, and she wanted to go and make it a good week, and according to her husband, it was a great week, and that?s who Tonya was,? Leffew said.
Leffew, 44, of Fishers, had sent four daughters to Camp CoBeAc, near Prudenville, Mich. Only one daughter was on the bus that pulled into the parking lot, and he raced to the crash site in northern Indianapolis. What he found was surreal ? clothing and other items strewn about and windows missing from the bus.
?You?re just praying that it?s not as bad as it looks,? he said Saturday. His daughters escaped with just bumps and bruises.
Indianapolis Public Safety Director Troy Riggs called the crash a ?great tragedy.?
?They were not that far from home. ... That only adds to the tragedy,? Riggs said Saturday.
Witness Duane Lloyd told WTHR on Saturday that he heard a loud noise behind him as he was traveling near the intersection and saw the crash around 4:15 p.m. ? about the time Chad Phelps had tweeted that the group would arrive at the church.
?I heard a skid. I looked back. I see this bus in the air and people falling out of the bus,? Lloyd said. ?I could have gone my whole life without seeing that.?
He said people approached and tried to help.
?People were literally trying to lift the bus,? Lloyd said. ?You just try to do what you can do.?
Three teenagers were still at IU Health Methodist Hospital, Winter said Sunday, including one in critical condition. Four teenagers remained at the Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health. Many of the patients had head, arm and leg injuries, fire officials said.
Leffew thanked rescue workers and good Samaritans who tried to help after the crash, as well as local churches and businesses that have offered their support.
?We are so grateful for that outpouring of love and care,? he said Sunday.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Congress needs to raise the debt limit and take away the "cloud of uncertainty" about the nation's ability to pay its bills, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said in an interview broadcast Sunday."The fight over the debt limit in 2011 hurt the economy, even though, in the end, we saw an extension of the debt limit. We saw confidence fall, and it hurt the economy," Lew said on NBC's "Meet The Press." :Congress needs to do its job. It needs to finish its work on appropriation bills. It needs to pass a debt limit."
Senior lawmakers on Capitol Hill are trying to come up with must-do legislation to keep federal agencies running after Sept. 30 and prevent the possibility of a government shutdown. At issue is what is normally routine: a plug-the-gap measure to fund the government for a few weeks or months until a deal can be worked out on appropriations bills giving agencies their operating budgets for the full 2014 fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1.
However, some Democrats don't want to vote to continue to fund the government at new, lower levels mandated by the automatic, across-the-board spending cuts known as sequestration. And some conservatives are making a last stand against President Barack Obama's new health care law. In addition, Senate Democrats are resistant to a $20 billion spending cut sought by many Republicans.
The issue has divided Republicans between those who think it's appropriate to use the threat of a government shutdown as a negotiating tactic, and those who don't.
Rep. Peter King, R.-N.Y., said Republicans should be searching for ways to de-fund or repeal the Obama health care act. But he called threatening to shut down the government "terror politics" and said the strategy wouldn't work. Others have worried that the gamesmanship could cause Republicans to lose control of the House.
Some observers say it's an idea doomed to fail anyway, since Obama brings both a veto pen and the White House podium to the battle.
"We should not be closing down the government under any circumstances," King said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union."
Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, has taken just that tack, rounding up fellow conservatives to pledge to oppose any budget extension that funds implementation of the health care law. Sunday, he said it was unfair to implement a law that many Americans don't want and that still has wrinkles that need to be ironed out.
"I understand that there's some in the Washington establishment, some from both political parties, that weren't happy with me over this," Lee said on "Fox News Sunday." ''And in this instance, I'm going to take that as a compliment, an indication that I'm doing something right."
"The fact is that we can delay this bill," he added. "And if we can delay it, we can stop its consequences, at least for now."
Lew maintains that the president won't negotiate over the debt limit.
"The mere fact of negotiating over the debt limit, after 2011, would introduce this notion that somehow there's a question about whether or not we're going to pay our bills, whether or not we're going to protect the full faith and credit of the United States," Lew said on ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos." ''Well, it's not OK to default. Congress can't let us default."
"(Congress) has to stop looking for what's the last possible moment," Lew told "Fox News Sunday." ''They should get back after they take their time off in August and they should finish their work and get it done so that there's no uncertainty about America's ability to pay its bills."
Separately, Lew said no federal bailout is in the works for the city of Detroit, which recently filed for bankruptcy protection. Pressed as to why the government chose to bail out big banks, the auto industry and others, but isn't assisting the city, Lew said on CNN's "State of the Union" that the government has been giving Detroit technical advice and has made resources available to help take down blighted properties through federal programs.
But Lew said that the situation during the financial crisis that warranted the other bailouts was "unique," and that the current problems that Detroit has with its creditors, "it's going to have to work out with its creditors."

Arrest made after online threats to UK campaigner
LONDON (AP) ? British police on Sunday arrested a man in connection with online threats made toward a feminist campaigner, a case which has ignited calls for social media platforms to institute stronger protections against verbal abuse.
Caroline Criado-Perez says she has been facing a deluge of abuse ? including threats to rape and kill her ? over Twitter during the past several days. She said the threats started after her campaign to get a woman's picture on a U.K. bank note succeeded and resulted in the Bank of England's announcement last week that author Jane Austen will feature on England's new 10-pound notes.
In Britain, hundreds of people are prosecuted every year for Facebook posts, tweets, texts and emails deemed menacing, indecent, offensive or obscene. But while there have been several cases of online threats directed at sports figures and politicians, the verbal assault against Criado-Perez appears to have ignited an unrivalled response and backlash against Twitter itself.
The graphic and offensive threats come as combatting the scourge of violence against women has taken on a more public sense of urgency worldwide, when tales of gang rapes in India and Brazil circulated around the world. Earlier this year, more than 130 nations agreed on a U.N. blueprint to combat violence against women, "one of the gravest violations of human rights in the world," according to Michelle Bachelet, the head of the U.N. women's agency.
The head of the World Health Organization, Dr. Margaret Chen, too, called violence against women "a global health problem of epidemic proportions" when the first major global review of violence against women came out in June ? a description that Criado-Perez drew on when writing in the New Statesman about the abuse directed against her. She urged Chen to "take a look at Twitter."
Already, Criado-Perez's experience has set off a campaign and petition to press Twitter to take more action to combat online threats.
Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper urged Twitter to carry out a full review of its policies on abusive threats and crimes, and a petition urging Twitter to introduce a "button" that would make it easier to report abusive Tweets has garnered 12,000 signatures.
On Sunday, British police arrested a 21-year-old man, who wasn't immediately identified, in relation to Criado-Perez's case.
She posted on Twitter that she was at a police station to make a statement and had many more threats to report ? followed by the hashtag "shouting back."

Just a Reminder That FedEx Doesn't Give a Crap About Your Packages
It can be FedEx. It can be UPS. It can be any shipping service, really. They all promise to get your packages to where you want them to go but there's no guarantee they'll treat your packages with any sort of tender, love or care. Most likely, they'll be thrown around, banged around and destroyed in the process. Just look at this FedEx employee have fun tossing FedEx packages into her truck. I can see the appeal of chucking boxes but doesn't this just create chaos and add more work later?
