ScienceDaily (Sep. 29, 2012) ? A new study suggests that increasing the amount of sleep that teenagers get could improve their insulin resistance and prevent the future onset of diabetes.
"High levels of insulin resistance can lead to the development of diabetes," said lead author Karen Matthews, PhD, of the University of Pittsburgh Department of Psychiatry. "We found that if teens that normally get six hours of sleep per night get one extra hour of sleep, they would improve insulin resistance by 9 percent."
The study, appearing in the October issue of the journal Sleep, tracked the sleep duration and insulin resistance levels of 245 healthy high school students. Participants provided a fasting blood draw, and they kept a sleep log and wore a wrist actigraph for one week during the school year. Sleep duration based on actigraphy averaged 6.4 hours over the week, with school days significantly lower than weekends.
Results show that higher insulin resistance is associated with shorter sleep duration independent of race, age, gender, waist circumference, and body mass index. According to Matthews, the study is the only one in healthy adolescents that shows a relationship between shorter sleep and insulin resistance that is independent of obesity.
The authors concluded that interventions to promote metabolic health in adolescence should include efforts to extend nightly sleep duration. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine reports that most teens need a little more than nine hours of sleep each night.

Google's new Field Trip app is a virtual local tour guide that's always running in the background. It pops up interesting local information???from local history and architecture to the best restaurants and shopping???without you having to ask for it.
After you choose whether you want just occasional notifications or frequent ones, Field Trip runs quietly in the background, looking for anything notable around you. The app pulls in information from a ton of sources, including Zagat and Eater in the food and drinks category; Architizer for architecture; and The Worldwide Guide to Movie Locations and Atlas Obscura for unique (and possibly bizarre) finds.
When it finds something, Field Trip notifies you with a ringtone and/or vibration. It can even read the title and description to you. View the event, place, or thing on a map and read more about it within the app. You can also choose to get more or fewer notifications from individual sources.
The Android?app has a really pleasant interface and definitely encourages you to step out and go explore (as the video above suggests). Google says the app is like having a local friend with you as you explore a city. You can download this virtual friend on Google Play now; an iOS version is coming soon.?
NOTE:?If Google Play?says?your phone is incompatible, it might not really be. I got the incompatibility warning too on my Galaxy S2, but was able to download it directly from the phone and it works!

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? The Russian foreign minister lashed out Friday at countries that are backing opposition groups fighting the dictatorship of Syria's Bashar Assad, saying that was "pushing Syria even deeper into internecine strife."
Sergei Lavrov, the top Russian diplomat, told the U.N. General Assembly that the fighting in Syria, which has killed more than 30,000 people, must end through a comprehensive cease-fire, release of prisoners and humanitarian aid. He said Russia backs the efforts of special U.N. envoy Lakhdar Brahimi to end the fighting. He said the number of war crimes is growing both by the Assad regime and the opposition fighters.
"Russia resolutely condemns any violence, wherever it comes from, and is convinced that there is still an opportunity to undertake collective actions," he said. "Practical steps to overcome the crisis need to begin with a comprehensive ceasefire, release of prisoners and hostages and supply of additional humanitarian aid. This will create conditions to start an inter-Syrian dialogue."
Russia, Syria's primary backer, and China have blocked three attempts by Western governments to pass Security Council resolutions that would impose sanctions on the Assad regime.
Lavrov said that extremist organizations including Al-Qaeda have become more active in Syria, where they've launched terrorist attacks against civilians and public infrastructure.
Any sanctions imposed by the Security Council must not harm the populations of targeted countries, Lavrov said in a call for humanitarian limits on sanctions.
Lavrov also decried unilateral sanctions that bypass the Security Council, where Russia holds veto power.
"For many years, the trade and economic, and financial restrictions imposed by the United States against Cuba have remained an illustration of negative impact of unilateral sanctions," he said. "Russia, together with the overwhelming majority of members of the international community, calls for an earliest lift of this blockade, as a relic of the Cold War."
Lavrov condemned violence in the Muslim world sparked by an American-made anti-Islam film.
"We believe it is an obligation of all states to protect from provocations and blasphemy the religious feelings of people of any religious affiliation," he said. "At the same time, there can be no justification to the acts of terror, regardless of where they are committed - be it in Libya, Syria, Iraq, Yemen or anywhere else. Attacks against diplomats or UN personnel are absolutely unacceptable."

The Lenovo ThinkCentre M92z is a very good Windows 7 all-in-one business desktop. It's got quad core power, plenty of system memory, and a responsive two-point touch screen. Unfortunately, Windows 8 is right around the corner with new requirements that the system doesn't quite match.
Design and Features
The M92z is built out of standard black ThinkCentre plastic, and it looks essentially like a monitor with built-in speakers. It's very corporate-looking, matching the Lenovo components and ThinkPads you may have around your office. The system's 23-inch screen has a two-finger touch screen using the more established infrared touch technology, rather than the newer capacitive touch found on newer PCs. This isn't a problem for most business use, as corporate IT departments are unlikely to switch to Windows 8 anytime soon. Touch functionality on Windows 8 is optimized for five to ten point touch screens.
The screen is sunken into the bezel because of the IR sensors, which is less clean looking than the seamless capacitive screens like that of the M92z's consumer cousin, the Lenovo IdeaCentre A720 ($1,449 list, 4 stars) . That said, the touch screen was responsive, and the system's IPS panel was bright and visible from a wide angle. The system came mounted to a height-adjustable, pivoting and tilting monitor stand that tilted far back enough that standing users could comfortably use the system while standing. This is good for kiosk and POS (point of sale) applications like in a retial environment.
The M92z came with a wireless keyboard and mouse, which can be stowed if they're not needed. The keyboard in particular was comfortable to use and the keys felt great to type upon due to their concave, semi-oval shape. The keyboard/mouse combo uses a USB wireless dongle, which fits in one of the system's four USB 2.0 ports on the back panel. Alongside the USB 2.0 ports on the back are an Ethernet port, DisplayPort-in, DisplayPort-out, and a Kensington lock port. DisplayPort-out is useful for connecting a second monitor, while DisplayPort-in can support an additional laptop (provided it has DisplayPort) or desktop. DisplayPort-in can also extend the life of the system, since it can act like a monitor after the rest of the system has been deemed obsolete. We would like to see HDMI-in to support other devices, but since the ThinkCentre line is so business-oriented, the lack of HDMI is not a deal breaker.
Two USB 3.0 ports, audio jacks, plus a SD-based media card slot are on the left side. The system's tray-loading DVD drive is on the right side of the system. The webcam on top of the screen has a physical shutter, so you can be assured the camera is off when you're not using it. That's important for businesses with privacy policies, like government offices. It matches the innovative webcam shutter system we saw on the Lenovo ThinkCentre M71z ($917 direct, 4 stars) .
Like most Lenovo business systems, the M92z comes free of extra icons on the desktop. There are a few programs built into the system's SimpleTap touch-oriented interface, but you have to manually turn that on for the first time. You'll find eBay, Kayak, PayPal, and other services there. It's not ideal, but at least Lenovo made an effort to make some of the services work in the touch interface. It's certainly a better solution than putting a dozen extra icons all over the system.
Performance
The M92z comes with an Intel Core i7-3770S processor, 8GB of memory, a 1TB hard drive, and Intel HD Graphics 4000. The combo is good enough for a 3,872 point score on PCMark 7, a test of the system's day-to-day performance. This is slightly faster than our midrange all in one Editors' Choice, the Asus ET2701INKI-B046C ($1,399 list, 4 stars) (3,512 points) , which has the same processor (but less memory). Both certainly outperform the aging Apple iMac 21.5-inch (Thunderbolt) ($1,199 list, 4.5 stars) (2,581 points) . Odd, since Apple is continuing to sell this model even though it is over a year old.
The M92z also did well on our multimedia tests: 1 minute 8 seconds on our Handbrake video test, 2:51 on our Photoshop CS5 test. The CS5 test in particular was fast for all-in-one PCs;p only the Asus ET2701INKI-B046C can match it. Systems like the recently reviewed Toshiba LX835-D3230 ($999 list, 3.5 stars) (1:17 Handbrake, 3:20 CS5) lagged behind the M92z. The 3D performance is as to be expected from an integrated Intel HD system: good for video, but only passable to poor for challenging 3D games like Crysis or Lost Planet 2. The system is fine playing casual games like Angry Birds or MMORPGs like World of Warcraft.
The Lenovo ThinkCentre M92z is a very good all-in-one PC for business. The system we tested came with 8GB of memory and a 1TB hard drive, so it can support even content creation workers like web layout folks and desktop publishing. It's certainly more than a match for the aging Apple iMac 21.5-inch platform and other utilitarian systems like the Toshiba LX835 series. However, its lack of 10-finger touch is likely to be a significant factor in future Windows 8 rollouts, so the system's eventual useful life has to be tempered by that omission. (That said, you can always use a Windows 8 optomized keyboard and mouse, but it's not the same as having a 10-point-touch screen.) It's not terrible: The system is one of the better Windows 7 touch-screen PCs out there. But the lack of 10-finger touch hold it back from unseating systems like the Asus ET2701INKI-B046C, our current midrange all in one Editors' Choice systems.

CONCORD ? A lawsuit filed last year by Exeter Hospital and nine other of the state's largest hospitals over changes in Medicaid policies and reimbursements will be allowed to continue.
On Thursday, U.S. District Court Judge Steven McAuliffe ruled against the state's motion to dismiss the suit. In his ruling, McAuliffe said he has multiple questions that still need to be answered about the case and that a hearing be scheduled on Nov. 1.
The 10 hospitals sued the N.H. Department of Health and Human Services, which administers the state's Medicaid program, over changes in Medicaid policies and reimbursements. One of the suit's core arguments is the state failed to provide hospitals with notice and an opportunity to comment on the reduced rates before they were finalized. The hospitals argued the state reduced reimbursements to accommodate state budgetary preferences.
McAuliffe ruled the hospitals have proven they suffered hardships because of the cuts and are entitled to a hearing.
?(The) plaintiffs have made a substantial showing that hardship is being suffered by both providers and Medicaid eligible patients due to the reduced rates, and that continuing enforcement of those rates, if unlawful, will at some point result in irreparable injury (e.g., loss of medical care facilities, providers, and the concomitant inability of Medicaid patients to obtain needed care),? McAuliffe wrote in his hearing.
McAuliffe said he wants the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services to answer the following questions at the Nov. 1 hearing:
? Should the court stay the Medicaid reductions pending a federal review of the cuts.
? Do federal officials believe the proper Medicaid rules were followed by the state in making the cuts.
? Do federal officials plan to take action against the state over the cuts.
? Do federal officials plan on approving the cuts.
The biggest hit to the hospitals during the most recent budget cycle were changes made to the Medicaid Enhancement Tax. The MET is a 5.5 percent tax on net patient service revenue on all hospitals in the state. Up until recently, the tax revenue was returned to the hospitals through the Disproportionate Share program, but those reimbursements were eliminated in the recent budget, resulting in $250 million in cuts to the state's 13 largest hospitals, including Exeter.
?While state budgetary concerns cannot conclusively dictate Medicaid reimbursement rates, they do play a significant and legitimate role in the rate-setting process,? McAuliffe wrote in his ruling. ?But, even where significant state budget issues arise, still, Medicaid reimbursement rates must be set by participating states in accordance with methodologies and standards that are published in a state plan and approved by the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services (currently through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services), and those rates must meet minimum federal statutory standards.?
As a result of the Medicaid cuts hospitals across the state made numerous staff reductions. Exeter Hospital cut 110 full-time equivalent positions throughout Exeter Hospital, Core Physicians, Exeter Healthcare and Synergy Health & Fitness. It also closed Exeter Healthcare, a skilled nursing facility that accepted patients who need long-term access to ventilators. Eight patients using the facility were transferred elsewhere in the state.
Exeter Hospital officials applauded the most recent ruling. ?We're pleased the judge has recognized the legal merit of the case,? said Exeter Hospital spokeswoman Debra Vasapolli.

Remember the Facebook Gift Shop, that place where you could pick up virtual Troll dolls and send them to your friends? Well, it died. But, a phoenix has arisen from its ashes -- Facebook Gifts -- which will allow you to send real Troll dolls to your friends. You'll be able to order gifts for people directly through the social network and suggestions to pick up a little something will be tied into birthday reminders and life events like weddings. The new initiative is the result of its decision to purchase Karma, a social "gifting" app, in May. Over a 100 retailers have signed up for the launch, including Starbucks, and Facebook obviously will be taking a small cut of each sale, which could be a huge source of monetization for the company, especially on the mobile front. Interestingly, friends can be notified before a gift is delivered and will be given a chance to tweak orders -- just in case you don't know your mom as well as you think you do. Gifts is rolling out slowly in select cities now and will expand in the coming weeks. Though, it also has a viral element since once you've been sent a gift you are also blessed with the ability to send gifts yourself. Check out the source links for more details.

? Ventilation is Key to a Good Roof
Occasionally I run into a customer who is afraid of giving a downpayment for work that they want done. They may have been burned in the past or just don?t trust themselves enough to have adequately checked out a business. If, for any reason, you do not trust the person who is trying to sell you something, do not do business with them. If you do trust them but still have reservations you can check out their online profile, or simply use a credit card.
Credit Cards: Many companies will now accept credit cards. You may have to pay the 3% processing fee, but if your contractor chooses not to show up to install your replacement windows or whatever product you are having installed, you can simply call your credit card company and tell them you never received the service promised. Most credit companies will remove the charge for up to 90 days after the card has been charged.
Online Profile: Several free websites such as Google and Yelp allow homeowners to comment and rate companies. Check them out BEFORE they come to your home. It is fair to ask the owner of a company for their full name as well. In Wisconsin, you can search circuit court records online to check them out, but be careful ? sometimes you can confuse someone who has the same or similar name but if you look closely you will notice they have a different birthdate, address, or middle initial. Today, nearly everyone has something in there. Even the author of this article has a ticket for not wearing his seat belt and driving a bit fast.
Better Business Bureau: The Better Business Bureau, sometimes just called the BBB, is available both online and over the phone to answer any questions that you have about a business. Their site is a bit tricky though so you have to know what to look for. Ratings are important, but even the absolute best company may have a maximum rating for A- until they meet the requirements of the BBB. Obviously if a company is only rated C or less, it should serve as a red flag, but you should also look at the amount of complaints a company has had. Is it spotless? Is there online one or two or has the company shown a pattern of poor service, poor products and poor judgement? Also check to see if customers have reviewed them. Are they positive, neutral or negative reviews? Sometimes the BBB will rate a company A+ even though they have had multiple issues with products and service. Be smart about using their website and look past just the rating.
Angie?s List: This is a tricky one. Angie?s list is paid for by the consumer which means if you want their ratings you have to pay for it. It sounds like it could be a decent service, but someone could easily buy subscriptions for their friends and relatives to artificially pump up their online ratings. If you use Angie?s list, use it in conjunction with other online rating places.
Gut Check: This may seem obvious, but if something just doesn?t feel right, that is reason enough not to move forward. Some people call it a ?spidey-sense? that is ?tingling? as if to warn them. But what it really boils down to is whether or not you feel your instincts are telling you that this is the right contractor or not.
So what is the right amount to put down? Many contractors require half down. Higher cost contractors often only require 1/3 down because their profits are higher. Often times you will find that the 1/2 a smaller contractor will require will be the same amount of money that the 1/3 was for a larger contractor. A good rule of thumb though is to never pay that second half until the work has been completed according to what has been written on the contract.
Why do contractors require down payments? They do this because they need to cover their materials and some of the costs of doing business. If they order products for your home and then show up on the day of install and the customer either isn?t home or refuses to let them install the product, then the contractor is not only out what they paid for the product, but they also will have to pay a restocking fee from their supplier and that is IF they allow product returns, plus they?ve lost transportation costs, delivery costs and have idled their work crew (which still needs to be paid) for the day. If a company does not require a downpayment you should be cautious of any warranty promises as there is little chance that they will be in business 5 or 10 years down the road.

When the history of the 2012 presidential campaign is written, one of the key story lines will be this: The Obama campaign went a long way toward destroying Mitt Romney before the Republican nominee got out of the starting blocks.
Consider this: During the two weeks encompassing the Democratic and Republican conventions - precisely the time when Obama starting building up a lead in the battleground states - the Obama campaign ran twice as many ads as Romney and all of the Republican groups combined, according to an analysis done by the Wesleyan Media Project. These were almost entirely negative ads run in the battleground states defining Romney as anti-auto-bailout, anti-woman and anti-middle class.
How could Democrats, with a big money disadvantage, beat Republicans on the airwaves? This was supposed to be the campaign where Mitt Romney and his Republican super PAC allies had a huge money advantage over the Democrats. After all, Republican outside groups have been awash in cash and that Romney himself has been on a fundraising juggernaut since he clinched the Republican nomination.
The primary factor is simply a strategic decision: The Obama campaign set out to define Romney early while the Romney campaign and its allies decided to wait until after the conventions to make a big advertising push. But today the Washington Post pointed to another factor that will help the Obama campaign continue to blunt the Republican money advantage: By law, television stations must give political candidates a discount (called "the lowest unit rate") on their campaign ads 60 days before a general election.
As the airwaves become saturated with ads, that means the national parties, super PACs and other outside groups can end up paying as much as six or seven times more for 30 seconds of airtime. The Post offers this example: in one Ohio market, a 30 second slot that costs the Obama campaign $125 is costing a conservative super PAC $900.
The cost disparity will continue to help the Obama campaign get more bang for its campaign buck than its Republican opponents, and even more than Romney himself. That's because while Romney's fundraising has been impressive, he raises much of it in higher dollar amounts, with much of the money going to the Republican National Committee. The RNC can run ads promoting Romney, but the airtime discount applies only to the candidates - not to the parties.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Richard Mourdock became one of the tea party's biggest winners of the 2012 primary season when he knocked off veteran Indiana Sen. Richard Lugar in a brutal campaign built on his contention that Lugar was too old, too out of touch and too friendly with Democrats ? a RINO, Republican in name only.
But the movement's biggest RINO hunter is now changing his tune as he tries to woo moderate voters in a tight race that stands as a key test of the tea party's ability to win outside the nation's most conservative states.
Mourdock is matched in the general election against moderate Democratic Rep. Joe Donnelly, who is running even in recent polls despite Indiana's Republican tilt. Suddenly, gone is the strident rhetoric in which Mourdock proclaimed that bipartisanship meant Democrats coming over to Republicans' thinking and that winning meant he would "inflict my opinion on someone else." In its place are support for parts of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, pledges to protect Democratic-championed programs like Social Security and Medicare, and even the once-shunned notion of compromise.
Welcome to "Extreme Makeover: Mourdock Edition."
Mourdock's awkward stagger to the center may be a necessary move if the Republicans are to hold a seat that had been a safe bet since Lugar first won it in 1976. The outcome will help determine whether the GOP manages to win control of the Senate, where Democrats now have a narrow four-seat advantage.
Advertising spending from both sides has topped $6 million so far and promises to explode in the final weeks. The candidates and outside groups have already surpassed the $5.6 million spent in Indiana's 2010 Senate battle.
The tea party has won Senate seats in South Carolina, Utah, Kentucky and Florida, but only one so far ? in Wisconsin ? in the more politically diverse Midwest. Mourdock and Texas Republican Ted Cruz represent the ultraconservative movement's best chance for increasing its clout in this election.
Rather than rally true believers, Mourdock is working now to tie himself closely to the state's popular governor, Mitch Daniels, who is a conventional business-executive Republican rather than a party insurgent, while tying Donnelly to Obama, who is expected to lose Indiana in November.
But the image change is a stretch for the 60-year-old former coal company executive, known for his fascination with motorcycles and race cars and for his puritanical criticism of Republicans he considers not conservative enough.
Mourdock, who ran unsuccessfully for Congress three times before becoming state treasurer, won tea party acclaim for an outspoken role in the fight against the auto bailout, for his criticism of Republicans who voted for Obama's Supreme Court appointments and for calling Lugar's relationship with Obama a "bromance." While reliably conservative, Lugar sought common ground with Democrats on foreign policy issues, a stance Mourdock exploited in the primary.
Mourdock now argues he was never just a "tea partyer," but rather a regular Republican with conservative values.
"I've had a traditional base of Republicans out there," Mourdock insisted in an interview. "Are we going to have all those Lugar Republicans coming over? Some have been slower to join us. But, you know, we're getting there."
Speaking with The Associated Press in an extensive interview Thursday, Mourdock said he represents a new bipartisanship, shared by other Republican candidates like Nebraska's Deb Fischer and Ohio's Josh Mandel. The old style of bipartisanship, practiced by Lugar and other Republicans working with congressional Democrats, placed the United States at the edge of the cliff, he said.
"Democrats would say, 'Let's spend $100 billion we don't have.' Republicans would say 'Oh, no. Let's spend $50 billion we don't have,' and the compromise was, 'Let's spend $75 billion we don't have," he said. "There are a lot of Republicans and a lot of Democrats who have worked together towards that end, and that's where we have reached that point that I think we have to take another path."
Indiana's shift to the right in recent years would seem to benefit Mourdock. The state has defunded Planned Parenthood, approved a right-to-work law that bars employers from requiring union membership and created one of the nation's broadest school voucher programs.
But Indiana voters have a penchant for split tickets and many are more accustomed to the buttoned-down Midwestern style of Republicanism evinced by the reserved Lugar, the former mayor of Indianapolis, and Daniels, a former corporate executive, than that of the brash Mourdock.
Polls indicate many voters were offended by Mourdock's slashing attacks on Lugar, even those who thought it was time for the 80-year-old senator to retire. In a statement, Lugar fed those doubts by saying Mourdock's hard-line approach is "not conducive to problem solving" and would be a ticket to failure as a lawmaker.
When the general election campaign revved up last month, a new Mourdock emerged with a milder message, bonding himself to Daniels and to well-known Republican surrogates such as Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman and Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn.
The transformation has left some Republicans shaking their heads.
"The night of the election he was singing the tea party's praises ? 'I couldn't have gotten elected without the tea party!' ? and then the clock turned midnight and he's a mainstream Republican," said Mike Murphy, an Indiana Republican strategist and former state representative.
Lugar supporter Anne Emison Wishard said Mourdock's change seems mostly cosmetic.
"I smell panic," said Wishard.
But Joe McKinney, a 59-year-old education professor at Ball State University who voted for Lugar, said the mainstream endorsements have made a favorable impression. They are "more moderate Republicans who seem interested in the issues I'm interested in," he said.
Donnelly says Mourdock's recent appearance at a tea party event in Texas with commentator Glenn Beck showed his true stripes and undercut his "ability to come back and talk to Hoosiers in the middle." Several prominent Lugar supporters have raised money or hosted meetings for Donnelly.
But Monica Boyer, co-founder of the tea party umbrella group Hoosiers for a Conservative Senate, said Mourdock's different messages don't worry her.
As for Donnelly, she said, "He could campaign with Mother Teresa and he would still have 'Obamacare' stamped on his forehead."

A ban on laptops by the German parliament has given rise to a humorous, anachronistic protest by the country's Pirate Party: instead of laptops, they brought in a?typewriter.
The ban became official a week ago, when the "Council of Elders," a group of senior officials, added new rules to the parliament guidelines that specifically prohibited laptops. Their objection is ostensibly that the fans and keyboards on such devices are loud and distracting; tablets are allowed, since they generally operate silently.
A second problem is the use of social networks during state business. Young and Internet-savvy factions like the Pirate Party advocate dissemination of information using the likes of Twitter and Facebook, but the Council of Elders deems it a "parallel debate" (as rendered?by Google Translate) and therefore bans such activity.
When the ban was announced, the Pirate Party members brought out an old electric typewriter instead, drawing instant remonstration from the parliamentary president,?Klaus Schlie, who accused them of "monkey business."
Monkey business or not, the symbolic?challenge to the ban resulted in debate and permission, for now, for members?to bring laptops. The matter was reported on the German news site KN Online, and the typewriter itself was captured by Twitter user @appgra.
The larger question, that of using social networks to augment political debates during parliament time, will be discussed at a later session.

According to company spokeswoman Ellen Richey, the payment platform provider intends to offer a point-to-point security solution that scrambles customer data at the terminal, reducing the likelihood of credit card fraud and identity theft.
Today's magnetic stripe credit cards date back to the late 1960s and early 1970s, a time when the prohibitive cost of processing tools was enough to deter criminals from stealing account data. Therefore, magnetic stripe data passes, "in the clear," from a merchant's card reader into their database, and over phone lines or Internet connections.
Visa's proposed solution eliminates those potential vulnerabilities by encrypting card information from the swipe to the database at the acquiring bank. Merchants get a payment "token" instead of actual cardholder account information, reducing the risk of internal theft. Likewise, a tapped analog phone line or a siphoned Internet connection will only give up useless, scrambled data under Visa's methodology.
The point-to-point encryption network helps merchants comply with existing security regulations, while streamlining the process of accepting next-generation Visa credit and debit cards with embedded EMV chips. The "contactless" version of the EMV standard being adopted among most American merchants passes more information to Visa's network, including a security sequence that retailers can use in "offline mode." P2PE security safeguards this data, minimizing the risk that identity thieves can clone an EMV credit card.
Visa expects minimal impact to merchants during the P2PE rollout. In a statement to reporters, Visa officials confirmed that merchants could mix new terminals with existing payment systems by using a "format preserving" version of the platform during the transition period. Many Visa merchants already face a deadline within the next few years to upgrade their customer-facing payment tools to comply with the industry's EMV acceptance roadmap. Officials promised more details about Payment Card Industry compliance and technical specifications before the service's initial launch in early 2013.
